Godzilla vs. The Hulk Debuts First Look, Teasing Marvel's Next Big Clash

Marvel just teased what promises to be one of their biggest clashes ever, as Godzilla is on a collision course with the Hulk. Marvel’s series of one-shots pitting the King of Monsters against the publisher’s biggest icons continues with Godzilla vs Hulk. Each match-up against Godzilla will be legendary, but his meeting with the Hulk will be titanic as seen in a new preview.

Godzilla vs Hulk #1 writer Gerry Duggan had an epic run on Deadpool in the 2010s.

On the r/hulk Subreddit, user TheBigGAlways369 posted a series of unlettered preview pages for Godzilla vs Hulk #1, which will be written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Giuseppe Camuncoli. The one-shot, the second of six, sees General Thunderbolt Ross and a team of Thunderbolts, complete with their own variant of Mechagodzilla, take on Godzilla.

While the Thunderbolts grapple with the kaiju, the action shifts to the Hulk, who has his hands full with Hedorah. The pages, while not providing much in the way of context, nevertheless begin building the hype.

Godzilla Was, For a Brief Period of Time, a Marvel Character

Now, Godzilla is Returning to the Marvel Universe to Destroy Once Again

A battle between the Hulk and Godzilla is the stuff of fanboy dreams, and one that, until a year ago, seemed to be wishful thinking. Marvel published a Godzilla comic in the late 1970s, which integrated a variant of the kaiju into its universe. Godzilla met Nick Fury and other Marvel icons, but never the Hulk, leading to a serious missed opportunity. Marvel lost the Godzilla license by decade’s end, and it seemed as if he might never return. However, last year Marvel’s original Godzilla comics returned to print in a new omnibus format.

When the Godzilla: King of the Monsters omnibus was announced, it led to speculation wondering if the King of Monsters would stomp and shamble his way across the Marvel Universe once again. The answer turned out to be a resounding “yes,” as the publisher is gearing up to pit Godzilla against its best heroes, across a variety of eras. Godzilla will throw down with the Fantastic Four in the 1960s and the X-Men in the 1990s. As seen in the preview pages for Godzilla vs Hulk #1, the creators have placed the story during the Hulk’s 70’s heyday.

Godzilla’s impending fight with the Hulk could be the single most destructive battle in Marvel history, becoming a case of the “unstoppable force meeting the immovable object.” Between them, Godzilla and the Hulk have caused incalculable amounts of damage and caused heavy casualties. The ruling parties of Earth have crafted protocols and procedures, most of them ineffective, in dealing with the Hulk and Godzilla. The preview pages for Godzilla vs Hulk #1 show that Mechagodzilla is now in the employ of General Ross and the Thunderbolts, implying that America and Japan have joined forces to immobilize the two monsters.

Godzilla’s impending fight with the Hulk could be the single most destructive battle in Marvel history, becoming a case of the “unstoppable force meeting the immovable object.”

This might indicate that Godzilla and the Hulk might be friends, but Duggan and Camuncoli have situated the action in the 1970s, when the Jade Giant was a rage-filled behemoth. In this light, the two will have an epic fight. Godzilla and the Hulk have been portrayed as unrelenting forces of nature, and hopefully the one-shot will settle the matter over who is the most powerful. The Hulk gets stronger the angrier he gets, meaning Godzilla might be in for the fight of his life–and the battle might end all life on Earth.
