Historically, elk roamed most of California–until hunting and habit loss nearly wiped them out. But now, the state’s population has boomed to 13,000 in 22 herds, prompting wildlife officials to release a new, comprehensive management plan. One major goal: expand and connect elk habitats for continued growth.
