Happy’s Place Season 1, Episode 10: Emma Kenney Explains Why Bobbie's Daughter Was Reluctant Towards Isabella
Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Happy's Place season 1, episode 10.
Happy's Place season 1, episode 10 aired Friday, January 10, introducing a vital character to the series. Emma Kenney guest stars as Bobbie's no-nonsense daughter, Gracie, who visits Knoxville during military leave. "The Macallister Girls" sees Isabella go over the top in an attempt to bond with her niece, but Gracie appears disinterested in forming a friendship. While they don't get off on the best foot, the women eventually realize they have more in common than they initially thought.
Their conversation leads to a much-needed talk between Bobbie and Gracie, in which the latter admits she enlisted in the military to escape her mom. However, Kenney believes that the mother-daughter relationship will only strengthen from their honesty, with Gracie promising she will return to Knoxville. The episode ends when Gracie asks Isabella to join their family photo, showcasing the bond that's formed between them.
ScreenRant interviews Kenney about Gracie's first impression of Isabella, whether her character could return in future episodes, and what to expect in The Conners season 7.
Kenney Was Excited About Gracie's Arc In Happy's Place Season 1, Episode 10
"I feel like that doesn't always happen in a one-episode experience. I felt really fortunate when I read the script."
ScreenRant: What excited you most about guest starring on Happy’s Place?
Emma Kenney: I was really excited to join a new cast that was already established with obviously somebody as iconic as Reba, who I had heard nothing but amazing things about. She really lived up to that reputation. She's really so lovely, and I really enjoyed my experience with her. So I was really excited. And on another note, I was excited to work at Universal Studios. That's a studio that's always been on my career bucket list, so I can check that off now.
Gracie is super tough, and she doesn’t let anyone walk over her. As an actor, what did you find most creatively fulfilling about playing this type of character?
Emma Kenney: I really felt lucky that her introduction episode had such an arc, and I feel like that doesn't always happen in a one-episode experience. I felt really fortunate when I read the script. I was very excited to see that there was such an arc, and I definitely felt like I could tackle that character and that arc. I felt happy that there was an emotional development between my character, Gracie, and her mom, Bobbie, Reba, and that you can kind of see the heart to her. She might start somewhere, but she ends somewhere else.
Bobbie and Gracie talked about Isabella before Gracie came to visit. What do you imagine those conversations sounded like?
Emma Kenney: She definitely probably warned her just because she obviously knows her daughter very well, who's pretty tough and more on the serious side of things. Maybe she's more of a realist than a dreamer, as Isabella's character is. I just think she was a little bit worried that they might not get along, but we definitely have a fun arc with it.
With that being said, what do you think Gracie's first impression of Isabella was?
Emma Kenney: I think her first impression was probably as Bobbie had, I don't want to say warned her, but described her as, and she was not surprised with who she met.
Kenney Believes Gracie Felt Replaced By Isabella In Happy's Place
"[Isabella has] such a close relationship with, not only her mom, but the people she's grown up with so closely and considers her family."
Isabella is a lot more open to building this relationship than Gracie is, initially. Can you expand a bit on where that resistance comes from?
Emma Kenney: I think there's probably a layer to Gracie of maybe feeling a little bit replaced with Isabella being around the same age as her, having such a close relationship with, not only her mom, but the people she's grown up with so closely and considers her family. So I definitely think there's an aspect of that.
Obviously, Gracie chose to go to the military and go overseas to fight for what she believes in, but I do think there's a level of that. I also think she's gone through a lot with the loss of her father, and it might've made her a little bit harsher as a protecting mechanism.
I was a little disappointed we didn't see the actual paintball scene because it would've been hilarious, but I enjoyed the silent disco. How was filming that?
Emma Kenney: I have to say, I did wish we had an actual paintball scene. [Laughs] I was wishing for that, but the disco scene was a lot of fun. Obviously, we didn't have any actual music playing, so it is kind of fun to have heightened senses in a scene like that where you have to speak louder and imagine the music. It was a lot of fun to see Reba dance and have that moment. We all had a really good time watching that.
You mentioned this earlier, but Gracie and Bobbie have an important and honest conversation towards the end of the episode. How do you think that will improve their relationship going forward?
Emma Kenney: They have a really important talk where they see each other and clear the air a little bit, which really opens up a door for more of a genuine connection with less judgment and walls up. So I think that was really important for their character dynamic and development.
Kenney Hopes To Return As Gracie In Future Episodes Of Happy's Place
"I was very honored to be there, and I would love to do more in the future."
Gracie and Isabella are in a good place by the end of the episode. Do you see them being real friends or are they too opposite?
Emma Kenney: Sometimes opposites attract. I do think they can have a real friendship, and I think this episode kind of laid down the groundwork of opening up that door for them.
Gracie did say that she'll keep coming back. Are you hoping to return to the show in the future?
Emma Kenney: Oh, of course, absolutely. I had such a wonderful experience with the entire cast and crew. It really is a great environment. I went into it as a newbie. They really made me feel included and a part of something special. I was very honored to be there, and I would love to do more in the future.
Is there a specific storyline that you'd like Gracie to have if she returns?
Emma Kenney: I would love to just delve into each relationship a little bit more, maybe on the emotional side, but also on the lighter side. I think that would be really fun. I love doing comedy. I also love doing emotional work, so a little mix of both would be right up my alley.
We're also huge fans of The Conners at ScreenRant. Is there anything that you can tease about the final season?
Emma Kenney: Yeah, we wrapped The Conners up with a six-episode [final season], which is a lot fewer episodes than we're used to. So we definitely made each scene very important and kind of loaded.
