Harlan Coben's New Netflix Thriller After Missing You Success Gets Filming Update From Star
Run Away, the new Harlan Coben Netflix thriller, gets a filming update from star James Nesbitt. Coben is a well-known and prolific author in the mystery/ thriller space, and his works have now been adapted into a series of successful TV shows under an overall deal with Netflix. Fool Me Once was a major hit in early 2024, and Missing You, his latest series, was also a big viewership win for the streamer. Now, several more series are in the works, at Netflix and beyond.
During a recent interview on BBC Breakfast (via GamesRadar+), Nesbitt reveals that Run Away is set to start filming next Monday, January 27. The actor teases what's to come from the Netflix show's story, promising lots of surprises and a great deal of intensity. Check out his full comment below:
I start filming on Monday. We've got a read-through today of his new production called Run Away, which is just fantastic, vintage him. I think it really has got huge depth, unbelievable twists and turns.
I play a successful businessman who's got a perfect life, a wonderful marriage, three children but then his eldest daughter Paige runs away. He finally gets a chance to find her, finds her strung out and vulnerable in a park. I think I have the opportunity to bring her home but she's not alone. And a terrible scene which descends into violence ensues and then I have to try and find her all over again. I can't wait.
Nesbitt previously starred in a Coben Netflix mystery thriller show called Stay Close, which was released in 2021.
What Nesbitt's Update Means For Run Away
When The Netflix Mystery Thriller Show Could Release
Though Nesbitt provides a strong synopsis for Run Away, there is a little more to the Coben story. Nesbitt will be playing a character named Simon, and his character ultimately ends up a prime suspect in a murder plot. There is also a fairly hefty body count thanks to the inclusion of contract killers Ash and Dee-Dee. In keeping with Fool Me Once and Missing You, Run Away will follow a character as they descend further into a complex web of mystery and crime, and this format is evidently striking a chord with viewers.
Nesbitt's filming update suggests the new Coben show could end up hitting Netflix around this time next year. Both Fool Me Once and Missing You have been big January hits in their respective release years, topping the global top 10 chart. Run Away isn't the only upcoming Coben project, however, as the author just recently revealed that he created a show called Lazarus that may be hitting Prime Video in 2025.
Our Take On Run Away
Fool Me Once & Missing You Leave Room For Improvement
Though Fool Me Once reviews were generally positive, if not somewhat lukewarm from critics, the Missing You reviews were very mixed. The Rotten Tomatoes audience scores for both shows are also pretty disappointing at 45% and 33%, respectively. Despite this, both were huge viewership hits. Following the Missing You ending, viewers could be ready for a new Coben mystery.
Run Away has an opportunity to improve on the shortcomings of both Fool Me Once and Missing You, telling a story that includes that classic Coben mystery while also boasting complex, compelling characters and an emotional narrative. Previous Coben TV shows like The Stranger, Stay Close, and Safe were all well-received, so this level of quality is certainly attainable for Run Away. Many questions remain about the upcoming Coben series, but Netflix clearly isn't done working with the author just yet.
