Hideo Kojima Shares His Confused Captain America: Brave New World Review: “I Haven’t Seen The Falcon And The Winter Soldier”

Hideo Kojima has shared his Captain America: Brave New World review. While it had a decent opening at the box office, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest Captain America movie had a big dip in its second domestic weekend, with a 68% drop, which is the third worst second-weekend drop in MCU history. One of the main factors impacting the film is Captain America: Brave New World's negative reviews, which painted a disappointing image of the film before it was even released, pointing out multiple flaws. With his superhero project reviews quite popular, Kojima has watched Marvel's new movie.

On Twitter, video game industry auteur Hideo Kojima revealed he watched Captain America: Brave New World but was left confused by the MCU's first movie of 2025.

The main source of Kojima's confusion is related to how Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson is now the MCU's Captain America. While he remembers Steve Rogers handed Sam the shield in Avengers: Endgame, Kojima did not watch Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Kojima also got confused about connections to future MCU movies, with the Avengers' MCU status and Thunderbolts* connections leaving him puzzled.

What Hideo Kojima’s Captain America: Brave New World Review Means

It Taps Into A Major Multiverse Saga Criticism

Kojima's confusion is directly related to one of the criticisms the MCU has suffered in recent years. With the start of the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios expanded beyond movies, now adding live-action TV shows, animated series, Special Presentations, and more to the franchise. With a large output of projects over the past few years, both fans and critics alike started complaining about how the MCU felt like homework at times, with audiences needing to watch an elevated number of projects to understand the overall story of the franchise.

10 Reasons Captain America: Brave New World Critics And Audience Reviews Are So Split

Captain America: Brave New World has divided audiences and critics, and a few key reasons explain the difference in opinions about the MCU movie.

While Sam Wilson did get the Captain America shield in Avengers: Endgame, Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier dedicated six episodes to Sam's journey as he accepted the mantle and truly became Steve Rogers' successor as Captain America. Those who did not watch the series would lose some crucial context, like Sam's friendship with Isaiah Bradley and Joaquin Torres, to Captain America: Brave New World. As Kojima revealed he did not watch the MCU series, it makes sense that he was confused by the events of the film, as he is missing hours of Sam's journey.

Our Take On Hideo Kojima’s Captain America: Brave New World Review

The MCU Needs To Strike A Balance

With the MCU's TV shows, Marvel has created a complicated field for the franchise. Captain America: Brave New World's reviews argued that the movie retread Sam Wilson's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier story and that getting to learn Sam's journey in the series to watch the movie felt like homework. As he did not watch the TV show, Kojima's review shows how MCU fans in his position and the general audience could be lost when Marvel closely connects movies to series. I believe a better balance has to be found, which Captain America: Brave New World failed to do.
