How did Godzilla change the world? At last, the kaiju is telling us how they shaped our future

Godzilla meets Hercules, as a new lore drop reveals how King Ghidorah altered the course of human history. Kaiju such as Ghidorah have played pivotal roles in shaping humanity’s destiny, stretching all the way back to ancient times. In Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II–Sons of Giants #5, one such encounter between the demigod Hercules and King Ghidorah is recounted. This explosive matchup would become the stuff of myths and legends.

Frank Tieri was the mastermind behind IDW's Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons trilogy. Inaki Miranda drew the first two installments and Angel Hernandez will draw the final part.

Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons II–Sons of Giants #5, was written by Frank Tieri and drawn by Inaki Miranda. The series, which explores the influence kaiju have exerted over humanity, reveals that King Ghidorah served as the basis for the mythological beast, the Hydra. A narrator gives a blood-curdling description of the Hydra’s powers–and they line up perfectly with Ghidorah’s. Hercules, in classical mythology, fought the Hydra as one of his 12 labors. These labors in many instances involved Hercules fighting monsters, and there is a possibility others were kaiju as well.

Kaiju are enormous, long-lived creatures, and have existed in a tense relationship with humanity for millennia. The “MonsterVerse” series of films, which includes both 2014’s Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, has leaned into this idea. The kaiju, called the “Titans” in this universe, have appeared to humanity, stretching back to the days of cave dwellers. Certain kaiju, such as Mothra, are still venerated in the present day, while others such as Rodan were revealed to be ancient gods. The sheer size and power of the kaiju ensures they will be worshipped and feared.

Perhaps the most feared kaiju in the universe is King Ghidorah. Unlike Godzilla or Rodan, Ghidorah comes from outer space. His three heads and massive wings make him a fearsome and unearthly sight. Ghidorah is not natural to Earth, and the MonsterVerse films have portrayed him as an invasive predator who could potentially upend the entire planet. This characterization is nothing new, stretching back to his debut in the Showa-Era films. Ghiodrah has always played the villain in the Godzilla series, having tangled with not only the King of Monsters, but Mothra and other kaiju as well.

IDW Has Explored Humanity and Kaiju's Relationship in Here There Be Dragons

Mothra Parted the Red Sea and the Mayans Worshiped Rodan

IDW’s Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons trilogy has inserted the “Big G” and the other kaiju into different timeframes throughout history. The books revealed that Mothra parted the Red Sea so that Moses and the Israelites could escape, and that Rodan had been worshiped by the Mayans. These miniseries pick up the threads the MonsterVerse laid down, pulling back the curtain and revealing the true extent of the kaiju’s influence on Earth’s history. Secret societies and major historical figures have encountered kaiju in their lives, and these encounters shaped humanity’s common destiny.

If the account is accurate, then Hercules was powerful beyond belief, as even Godzilla had struggled to contain King Ghidorah.

One such encounter, between Hercules and King Ghiodrah, changed the course of Greco-Roman history, and by extension, the Western World as well. Hercules’ 12 labors were massive feats of strength and ingenuity. Hercules not only fought King Ghidorah, but seemingly sent the kaiju running as well. If the account is accurate, then Hercules was powerful beyond belief, as even Godzilla had struggled to contain King Ghidorah. Godzilla himself is a powerhouse, and a confrontation between him and Hercules could be even more epic than his fight with King Ghidorah.
