How do Japanese consumers view the coming era of gene-edited food?

Are genome-edited foods trusted? The National Federation of Consumer Organizations (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) has recently released the results of a consumer survey on genome-edited foods.

The survey was conducted for five days from June 2nd to 6th, 2022, targeting men and women in their 20s to 60s. Valid sample size is 554 people. Analysis was conducted by the Federation of National Consumers’ Associations using the tabulation software provided by Macromill Co., Ltd.

Regarding the awareness of the term genome-edited food, 41.9% said they had heard of it but did not know what it was about, and 38.6% said they had never heard of it.

As for the image, only 0.7% answered [that GMOs have a] “good image” and 9.4% said “relatively good image”, totaling more than 10%. About 60% of the respondents had a bad image, with 39.7% having a “relatively bad image” and 17.3% having a “bad image”.

Regarding how deeply they know about “genome-edited foods”, 15.7% of respondents know one of the three genome-edited foods “tomato”, “red sea bream”, and “tiger puffer” that are already on the market. It wasn’t too much. In addition, 17.3% of the respondents knew that “high-yield rice” and “poison-free potatoes” were under development.
