How Likely Is A Nintendo Direct In February 2025?
Nintendo is absolutely on a roll right now, building up hype for the Switch 2 despite a number of leaks threatening to unravel years of hard work, and releasing incredible exclusive after incredible exclusive. It feels like after a strong era with the Nintendo Switch, the beloved video game company is showing no signs of slowing down. That is, naturally, amazing news for fans, but it doesn't help quell the very strong and ever-tantalizing desire for more news, more reveals, and, more importantly, more Nintendo Directs. These iconic events have become a highlight of every fan's year.
This is largely thanks to their immaculate presentation and the belief that one day, they'll finally reveal Silksong after years of waiting. However, Nintendo is typically tight-lipped about when the next Direct will air, usually only letting people know a day or so beforehand. Fortunately, that's where leakers come in handy, as these eagle-eyed fans manage to find information buried in the most unlikely of places that more often than not accurately pinpoints when the next Direct will be. It just so happens that, according to new rumors, the next Direct is sooner than some may think.
A Nintendo Direct Leak Suggests A February Direct
It's Based On Compelling Evidence
According to Reddit user cookiemaster221 (as reported by ComicBook.com), there is going to be a Nintendo Direct in early February. While the details given by the leaker are scarce, they believe that this Direct will continue the long-running tradition of hosting one in February, as it would release close to Nintendo's next earnings call, come months after the last Direct, and, most importantly, fall on the same day as the Sava Data Transfer maintenance. All of this is circumstantial, and naturally, people will have to wait until Nintendo officially confirms anything, but it's strong evidence to base assumptions on.
Importantly, the leaker hasn't revealed what the Direct would focus on, including if it would announce any new first-party Switch games. 2025's lineup for the Nintendo Switch is a bit up in the air thanks to the launch of the Switch 2, with only a handful of major games, including Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition earmarked for release in the first half of the year. A Direct in February could rectify this by showcasing what titles from first and third-party developers are due to come out on Nintendo's eight-year-old console.
There have been other rumors surrounding a February Nintendo Direct, including ones that claim it will focus on current-gen games, and potentially even reveal a big new title for the Nintendo Switch. All of this is, of course, merely speculation based on unnamed sources or compelling-sounding evidence, so it is best to take it with a grain of salt. This is especially true considering that Nintendo has already announced a Direct, and it's definitely happening just two months after this rumored February one.
An April Direct On Switch 2 Has Already Been Confirmed
It Will Be A Deep Dive On The Hardware And Its Upcoming Games
At the end of the record-breaking Switch 2 reveal, Nintendo announced that a full-blown official Direct would be taking place on April 2, 2025. This Direct will focus on the Switch 2 and what players can expect, with more information likely revealing its launch lineup and a release date for it. If the February Nintendo Direct is real, then that means there would only be just shy of two months between them. While not unheard of, Nintendo typically spaces out its Directs, especially first-party ones, and rarely hosts them so close together.
When the first Switch was revealed in October 2016, Nintendo similarly promised a follow-up Direct that would expand upon its features and games, releasing it three months later in January 2017. It poured all of its efforts into getting that Direct right, showcasing just enough to hype fans up while keeping enough secret that the entire experience wasn't spoiled. Nintendo is likely doing the same again with its April Switch 2 Direct, putting together a packed presentation that's sure to delight fans.
Of course, that doesn't mean it's impossible it didn't already have a Direct planned for the current-gen Switch. The last Direct was an Indie World and Partner Showcase hybrid that aired on August 27, 2024, roughly six months before the rumored February Direct is alleged to release. The last full-blown first-party Direct aired all the way back on June 18, 2024, which was roughly eight months before February's Direct. So, while there is the April Switch 2-focused Direct coming up, fans are definitely due one for the Switch any day now.
Will A February 2025 Nintendo Direct Happen?
It Seems Unlikely
However, while the evidence pointing towards a February Direct is compelling, it seems highly unlikely that a Nintendo Direct will air in February. Not only would a February Direct be pointless due to its proximity to the April Direct and the fact that Switch fans are now likely more excited about the Switch 2 than new games for the current-gen version, but it is also unlikely to be a priority for Nintendo at this late stage. The Switch will soon enter its eighth year on the market, making it one of the longest-surviving consoles before the next generation is released.
The chances of Nintendo investing resources in it instead of prioritizing new games for its more powerful hardware is unlikely. That's not to say that the Switch won't continue to get new games, as many are speculating that much-requested remakes may release soon. Additionally, third-party support for the Switch will continue for some time, as indie developers will rely on its established install base to continue selling their games. However, it is unlikely that Nintendo will pour too many resources into hyping up new releases for the last-gen Switch, especially if the Switch 2 ends up launching around May 2025.
By now, Nintendo fans should be used to waiting a little longer than they'd like, so the few months before the April Direct shouldn't be too difficult. While, of course, there is every possibility that Nintendo has a secret February Direct up its sleeve, people should definitely not get their hopes up as it will likely not happen. Instead, everyone should get excited about the already announced Nintendo Direct in April, and begin wildly speculating about what games will be released for it, whether Silksong will finally get a new trailer, and if Mario Galaxy 3 is on the cards.
