How Severance Season 2, Episode 4's Major Twist Impacts Mark & Helly Going Forward Teased By Stars
Warning: Spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 4Severance stars tease how season 2, episode 4's major twist will impact Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) moving forward. Severance season 2 episode 4 finds the MDR team in a frozen tundra for an "Outdoor Retreat Team Building Occurrence." They make camp for the night, and Mark and Helly sleep together, but the next morning, Irving (John Turturro) accuses Helly of being a mole and begins drowning her to prove his point. It is revealed that innie Helly was actually outie Helena Eagan all along since returning to MDR.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Scott and Lower teased how the Helena reveal is going to impact Mark and Helly moving forward. Though the actors were wary of spoiling what comes next, Scott says that this "changes quite a bit in Mark's mind" as he will now reconsider his intimate moment with Helly. Lower concurs, adding that she feels "empathy" for both Helly and Helena in light of this revelation. Read their full comments below:
Scott: [This] changes quite a bit in Mark's mind I mean, this was a life-changing moment for him. He's been in existence for two and a half years or something, so this is huge. His feelings for Helly have only grown thus far this season, so by the end of episode 4, we don't know how this hits Mark, what this means emotionally, but Helly is a huge part of his life. Huge. And I think that a lot of his identity is wrapped up in how he feels about her and how she feels about him, so you can imagine this being tectonic.
Lower: It's obviously a gut punch and they're both going to reckon with questions of autonomy and consent. I felt empathy for Helly not having a say in what was happening, and then I also felt this empathy for Helena, because this is the first time she's experienced this kind of connection and humanity, and it's inside of a persona that she didn't earn. So navigating the reality of that and trying to really see it from both of their perspectives, and obviously Helly's perspective comes back online, so in episode 5, the rage and betrayal that she feels is justified.
What Severance Season 2, Episode 4's Major Twist Means Moving Forward
How Will It Impact Mark & Helly?
Though the full extent of the fallout isn't seen in Severance season 2 episode 4's ending, Mark's world should be rocked by the revelation that Helly R. had actually been Helena Eagan this season, shattering his sense of identity and trust. With feelings now tangled in betrayal and confusion, the revelation should force Mark to reconsider the legitimacy of his relationship with Helly. This internal conflict promises to drive him on a quest for clarity, leaving him vulnerable yet determined to understand the true nature of their lives, both in and outside Lumon.
On the other hand, Helly now faces the daunting challenge of reconciling her two conflicting identities – her persona forged in the workplace and Helena Eagan, the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. The shocking twist undermines Helly's autonomy and should force her to question the legitimacy of her past choices and relationship with Mark. This tension between inherited destiny and self-determination should spark an internal struggle in Helly for the rest of season 2, and perhaps the series.
