How The Next Nick Frost & Simon Pegg Collaboration Would Be Very Different From The Cornetto Trilogy Explained By Stars: "We Will Do It, I Promise You"
Nick Frost and Simon Pegg tease their Cornetto Trilogy follow-up while at Awesome Con. Shaun of the Dead in 2004 kick-started the careers of Frost, Pegg, and director Edgar Wright, with the zombie dark comedy movie proving popular with audiences and critics alike. The trio followed that film up with Hot Fuzz in 2007, which was another success, before reuniting for The World's End in 2013. Since the conclusion to what is now known as the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, however, Frost, Pegg, and Wright have all been pursuing different projects.
During a recent appearance at Awesome Con, moderated by ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier, Frost and Pegg are asked about whether a fourth Cornetto movie is on the cards. Frost, 53, confirms that the interest to work together is still present, but hints that another movie may not arrive for some time, perhaps not until they're in their 60s. Yeah, I think the nice, good thing about us being friends and making films together is that it doesn't matter when we make that film. Also, I think it's quite unique to get to see an ensemble of actors and directors and filmmakers get old together. I haven't seen that very very often, but that's happened to us. What's really pretty cool is that, as we get older and all of us age, we still - and I'm not sure how it works - seem relevant to a younger audience.
I think it will be nice if we sit on this for a bit, and it's about 60-something-year-old men aging, and what their friendships look like.
Pegg, 55, echoes Frost's sentiment about wanting to work as a trio once more, but says that their next collaboration wouldn't take the form of a spiritual successor to the Cornetto Trilogy, and that it would be quite different. As for when, the actor explains that it's just a matter of finding the right story idea and the time to bring that idea to life:
It's not really an "if" ever for us; it's always just "when." Edgar [Wright] and I are always talking about what we do next, and again, we're talking about, "Let's really piss people off. Let's just do something [crazy]." We're not going to make another Cornetto movie, in that the Cornetto movies were about the individual versus the collective in various different incarnations.
I think whatever we do next would be very different from that. He's come over to mine and stayed, and we've chatted it through and come up with some ideas. But we're all a bit busier than we used to be. It's hard to find the time. I need six weeks with that guy to hash out a tagline or maybe a first draft. And he's just finishing The Running Man, so we just need to find the time to get together. And we will do it, I promise you.

Pegg, Frost & Wright All Have Busy Schedules
Each of the Cornetto movies has a similar comedic tone and filmmaking style, but all are very different in terms of their story and genres. While Shaun of the Dead spoofs aspects of classic zombie horror, Hot Fuzz plays on the excesses of '90s action movies. The World's End, similarly, takes the trilogy into the realm of sci-fi. The comments from Pegg and Frost suggest that, whatever comes next, it won't follow this same pattern or be spiritually connected to what has come before, which could be a risk given just how beloved the Cornetto Trilogy is.

As for when this next movie could arrive, Pegg reveals that Wright is currently hard at work on his The Running Man remake starring Glen Powell, which is due out later this year. Pegg, too, has several projects on the horizon, including a potential Star Trek 4 and a movie called Angels in the Asylum. Frost, on the other hand, could find himself very busy for the foreseeable future, as he is reported to be in talks to play Hagrid in HBO's Harry Potter TV show.

The Cornetto Trilogy Follow-Up Could Be Worth The Wait
It's now been 12 years since The World's End was released, and all three creatives have gone on to participate in some impressive projects. It could certainly be argued, however, that many of these individual projects, save perhaps for Pegg's role as Benji in the cast of the Mission: Impossible movies, haven't quite had the same impact as the Cornetto films. Wright's Last Night in Soho (2021), for example, though generally well-received, didn't feel like it had the same impact as something like Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz.
Pegg can next be seen as Benji in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which releases on May 23.
It's certainly understandable that Pegg, Frost, and Wright want to pursue other creative avenues, but it would be exciting to see the trio reunite for a new movie. From the sound of things, it seems like another collaboration won't happen until the right idea comes around, and this is reassuring purely from a quality perspective. It remains to be seen what will come next for Pegg, Frost, and Wright after the Cornetto Trilogy, but audiences evidently may still have a while to wait to find out.
