How To Unlock Swimming & Diving in Hello Kitty Island Adventure
While exploring the map of Hello Kitty Island Adventure, players may quickly realize that a large portion remains underwater and is only accessible through diving. Unfortunately, at the start of the game, you will be unable to even swim, let alone dive to find Hangyodon. Thankfully, it's not too difficult to reach these underwater regions, as long as you put the time in.
For both swimming and diving, the right tools must first be unlocked. For swimming this includes flippers, and for diving this includes a snorkel mask. Unfortunately, both of these items are acquired separately and from two different residents in Hello Kitty Island Adventure who are in an area initially blocked off to players: the Spooky Swamp.
How To Unlock Flippers For Swimming
Power Up The Gate To Reach Keroppi
As stated, to unlock swimming, players will first need to obtain a pair of flippers, which can be a little tedious. While Keroppi gives you the crafting plan for them relatively quickly upon meeting, simply getting to Keroppi is the hardest part. This is largely because both Keroppi and Kuromi reside in the eastern portion of the map, Spooky Swamp, where players are unable to go until they have opened the gate near Chococat’s crafting bench.
To do this, players will need to work with Chococat to complete the Power Up The Gate quest, which involves tracking down three yellow Power Crystals by solving puzzles around the main part of the resort. The quest is unlocked almost immediately upon befriending Chococat, and he provides a tool to find the Power Crystals quickly, so it shouldn't take too long to finish. Once that is complete and the gate is open, head on through and find Keroppi towards the southern end of the Spooky Swamp.
If you know how to use the gliding balloons efficiently, you may be able to wiggle your way over the broken bridge once the gate is open and save yourself some walking, but if not, just go around the long way.
After you find and provide Keroppi with his welcome gift, you will be able to start the Finding Flippers quest. Keroppi will provide you with the plans for building the Flippers and the main piece, the fins. All you need to do now is find the Flipper straps. If you head a little left of Keroppi, west on the map, there will be a small dock with a chest on it containing the straps. If you have trouble finding it, try turning on the guide for the quest in the quest tracking menu, which will create a glowing light leading you there.
With both items in hand, head to Chococat’s crafting bench and craft the Flippers. Once crafted, the flippers will always remain an active item. This means you won’t need to open them up on your tool wheel to swim, they’ll simply auto-activate anytime you’re in the water, allowing you to swim freely. However, you will still be unable to dive as that requires a secondary item.
How To Unlock The Snorkel For Diving
Befriend Kuromi In The Spooky Swamp
The Snorkel, which is necessary to dive in the water, is unfortunately not as easy to unlock as the Flippers. Similar to Flippers, however, the resident that you need to speak with will also be found in the Spooky Swamp. Though it might seem strange, the spookiest Sanrio friend on the island, Kuromi, is the key to unlocking the Snorkel. After reaching friendship level 6 with her, she will unlock the Deep Diving quest.
To begin, she will inform you about a lost item of hers in Spooky Swamp. Her locket has sunk to the bottom of the pond behind her witch's hut, and she needs your help retrieving it. For this task specifically, she will allow you to borrow her Snorkel. To use the Snorkel, simply jump in the water and then use the designated button or JoyCon shown on the screen with the Snorkel icon, to swim down. Note that you won't physically see a snorkel on your character, but it's working regardless.
This will cause you to dive under the water, where you can retrieve Kuromi’s lost item. Note that you will see a stamina bar appear after going underwater which monitors your ability to keep diving. If this bar runs out before you surface, your character will automatically stop and swim back up. Unfortunately, Kuromi will take back her snorkel at the end of the retrieval, but in exchange, she’ll provide you with the crafting plans for one so you can make your own.
To craft the snorkel, you’ll need 2x Sparks, 2x Iron Ingot, and 10x Rubber. Rubber can be found in the main area of the resort, Iron Ingot can be crafted from the Iron Ore found all around Mount Hothead, and for the Sparks, you can craft those from the friendship gift provided by Kuromi herself. Once you have all the materials, head to a crafting station in Hello Kitty Island Adventure and build the snorkel.
Similarly to the flippers, the snorkel will operate automatically and doesn’t need to be equipped. Simply jump in the water and move down to begin diving, but keep an eye on stamina. If possible, try to unlock the mailbox near Hangyodon’s comedy club. This will give you a fast travel point right in front of his club, underwater, so you won’t have to worry about running out of stamina when trying to visit him in Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
