One of Alabama’s most fascinating hikes, this 7-mile out-and-back through Cane Creek Canyon combines dramatic canyon scenery with waterfalls and gorgeous wildflower displays on a privately owned 400-acre preserve.

From the trailhead, hike half a mile past a rock shelter and enjoy long-range views of Cane Creek Canyon and surrounding mountains from the 800-foot summit. Descend into the canyon and hike along the blue-green waters of Cane Creek, where hundreds of periwinkle flowers cling to the rocks. Pass a picnic area at 2 miles and continue up a strenuous, boulder-strewn path to Devils Hollow, a canyon hugged by limestone walls. Continue past a series of waterfalls to the Yellow Wood Rock Shelter, a good place to break for lunch. Cross the creek and hike beneath giant rock outcroppings as you complete the loop.
