I Admit It: Absolute Wonder Woman's Incredible Magic Makes Her Better Than Ever

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Absolute Wonder Woman #4!The Absolute Wonder Woman's first adventure is coming to a close and, in my opinion, the magic she's brought to this series has made her cooler than ever. Don't get me wrong, Diana's always been a killer hero, but her Absolute counterpart is something special.

Unlike the Prime version of Diana, the Absolute variant was raised in hell by the witch Circe. As such she's got a lot more well-versed in the mystic arts than the standard Wonder Woman. As her final battle with the Tetracide begins, Absolute Wonder Woman pulls out a spell that showcases just how wonderful she really is.

Absolute Wonder Woman's Blood Magic Repairs Her Greatest Injury

I'm Spellbound By Her Latest Magic Ritual

In Absolute Wonder Woman #4 by Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey, Diana's spell to deafen Gateway City in order to protect its citizens from the Tetracide's call has worked. And Wonder Woman's message to help others in this time of crisis has inspired private investigator Etta Candy to go out and help people in need. She says goodbye to her sister, Gia, but before Etta can leave, Steve Trevor arrives on the sisters' doorstep with Absolute Wonder Woman and asks if they can come in.

Absolute Wonder Woman reveals that she's created a protective spell around the Candys' building so that she can ask for Gia's aide. Gia runs a New Age shop and Diana is in need of ingredients so that she can properly restore her arm and be able to fight the Tetracide at full strength. Thankfully, Gia has everything that Diana needs, and after complimenting Gia’s store, Absolute Wonder Woman asks if there’s somewhere private she can conduct a spell.

Wonder Woman goes to a backroom with the ingredients, as well as blood drawn from Etta, Gia, and Steve, and begins to perform an incation to the goddess Hecate. Diana is overcome with energy, but Hecate comes through and gives Diana what she’s asked for. Thanks to the blood magic, Absolute Wonder Woman has regrown her right arm and her strength is fully returned. She thanks her allies and heads out to stop the Tetracide, which has begun to move into Gateway City.

The Absolute line of comics has been interesting to see how different these heroes are from the ones we know in the standard DC titles. When Absolute Wonder Woman was first announced, I had no clue what it was that was going to make her so different from the Prime Diana (aside from being raised in Hell away from the Amazons, that is). But what’s been clear over the past four issues is that the magic Absolute Wonder Woman performs puts her in a whole different ballpark compared to her counterpart.

Don’t get me wrong, Wonder Woman is an awesome hero. But the magic Diana has demonstrated in this series is just so off-the-wall and cool. Not to mention she’s clever when applying it. I mean, she knew that the Tetracide would lure in anyone who heard it with its deadly call, so what did she do? She deafened Gateway City! And when she loses an arm mid-battle? She gathers some ingredients, adds in a splash of blood and simply grows a new one. Sorry, but I just don’t see the Prime Wonder Woman doing that.

As impressive as it is to see Diana have a spell in her back pocket to recover from the loss of an arm, this is still just the first adventure we've seen her on. I’ve got no doubts that this Wonder Woman has more magical spells and relics to help her out of a tight jam. Can she summon magical creatures other than Pegasus? Can she transform into an animal? Or could she take a cue from her Prime counterpart’s origin and create life from clay? With magic like hers, there’s no limit to what Absolute Wonder Woman can do.

We're just at the beginning of Absolute Wonder Woman's journey and there's undoubtedly plenty more magic and spells to come. Will they all be as cool as her performing a blood ritual to re-grow an arm? Given how many big swings the first several issues have taken, I'd say so! Hopefully, Absolute Wonder Woman has a lot more spells she hasn't shown off, and she's got other kinds of magic that are both kick-ass and a delight to see.

Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
