I Can't Believe Jason Momoa Predicted His DC Universe Casting 2 Years Ago While Still In The DCEU

Jason Momoa was recently cast in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and I'm shocked that he predicted his own role before the previous DC Extended Universe had even come to an end. As the cast of Supergirlbegins to fill, with filming slated to start soon, the actor joins an incredible slate that may wind up being important parts of the new universe. After an important place as Aquaman in the previous universe, it seems likely that Jason Momoa's new character may be a central figure in this new world.

The shape of the DCU and its use of DCEU characters is complex and confusing. While some characters and actors, like John Cena as Peacemaker and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, have been brought over to the new universe in their same roles, others have not. This makes Jason Momoa's new casting a bit difficult to wrap one's head around. Fortunately, based on conversations as well as designs of his new character, I have hope that Jason Momoa's new role will be distinct enough that audiences will not be confused.

Jason Momoa Discussed Being Cast As The DC Universe's Lobo Before He'd Even Fully Finished As Aquaman

Momoa Seems Almost Too Perfect For The Role Of Lobo

In December 2023, before Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was released in theaters, Jason Momoa spoke about his desire to be cast as Lobo amidst DCU casting rumors. Reflecting on the character of Lobo in an interview with Fandango, he said: "It's pretty perfect. It's the perfect role. I mean, listen, if they call me and ask me to play it? It's a f*** yeah." These rumors have continued ever since, with the confirmation of the actor coming onboard in the role only occurring in January 2025. This is an incredible step for the new universe.

Rumors about Momoa playing Lobo began with the discussions of the new universe in January 2023, and it is unclear when Momoa was actually cast in the role. Notably, for example, Ben Affleck had been cast as Batman half a year before the news was released to the public. It is possible that Momoa has been cast in this role for some time, and this is only coming out officially now. Either way, it is a very exciting prospect for the new DCU.

Jason Momoa's Long-Term Lobo Casting Dreams May Have Made His DC Universe Role More Likely

Momoa's Passion For The DC Character Likely Contributed To His Eventual Casting

Rumors quickly began to swirl about Momoa playing Lobo in the DCU, but it is likely that the actor's own passion for the role resulted in his eventual casting.Momoa has played villains similar to Lobo in other movies, and the actor's appearance and demeanor are perfectly suited to the intergalactic bounty hunter. However, it is the palpable passion that Momoa has demonstrated for the role, and his clear hunger to take it on, that likely contributed to his eventually being cast in the role.

Having this kind of passion for a less well-known comic book character is a unique feature that may go a long way for the character and actor. While casting for characters like Batman has countless contenders, it is exciting to see figures who are passionate about these less well-known roles. Internet engagement too certainly gave a great deal of support to the actor as the character, and this has culminated in his eventual casting in the film. Everything seems to have worked together perfectly.

I Can't Wait To See What Jason Momoa's Lobo Is Like After Years Of Build-Up

The New Character Is An Exciting Addition To Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow

I've been able to imagine Jason Momoa in the role of Lobo for some time, but I can't wait to see what it's actually like. Lobo is a unique character that has elements of Wolverine and even Deadpool, with ambiguous morals, some humor, and incredible violence. His design is colorful, spacey, and strange, and seeing Momoa chew up the scenery in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow makes the second DCU feature even more exciting than it already was.

While some castings may seem tired after being rumored for so long, adding Momoa to the DCU is an incredible injection of energy into the new franchise. His Aquaman was one of the best characters in the DCEU, and his turns in films like Fast X and Dune clearly show the energy and vitality that the actor brings to each of his roles. Alongside Milly Alcock's Supergirl, the two Westeros alumni seem set to be important parts of the cosmic side of the new DCU.

I can't wait for every film in the DCU, but Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow could be something genuinely special. The Tom King comic book is an incredible inspiration, and the unique setting and style could make for an excellent second entry in the DCU after Superman. I have some worries about this brutal, cosmic story connecting with audiences, but the addition of Jason Momoa, after years of rumors, helps to dissuade that. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will allow Momoa's time in DC to continue, and the audiences win as a result.
