I'm Convinced Invincible Season 3 Just Introduced The Show's Most Tragic Villain Yet
Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episodes 1-6.While many of Invincible's villains are incredibly violent and ruthless, some have a more sympathetic side, and I'm convinced season 3's newest antagonist is the show's most tragic yet. Alongside Invincible introducing the villainous members of the Order, season 3 has also brought back some unapologetic evildoers, such as Doc Seismic, the Mauler Twins, and Angstrom Levy. However, not all the show's antagonists have blatantly evil intentions, as Magmaniac and Tether Tyrant's emotional story in episode 3 proved crime was the only real way they could afford a place to live, thus explaining their immoral actions.
They tried to work regular jobs and showed remorse for their criminal activity, but they simply couldn't make it work and ended up reverting to their old ways before being stopped by Mark and Oliver. Still, despite how tragic their story is though, it's nothing compared to Powerplex's heartbreaking journey. Episode 6 continued Invincible's attempt to portray Mark in a more villainous light by reminding the audience of his involvement in the Chicago massacre from season 1, which directly impacted Powerplex's dark fate. Unfortunately, this story doesn't have a happy ending, and Powerplex's motivation only makes it more devastating.
Powerplex's Personal Grudge With Mark Is Completely Justified
The Lack Of Accountability Over What Happened In Chicago Has Understandably Upset The Victims
Powerplex's story in "All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry" is all about wanting Invincible to take accountability for what happened in Chicago, making his grudge more understandable. While the audience is well aware that Mark isn't responsible for the tragedy and still has his own trauma over what happened while fighting his dad, the public doesn't know about this due to heroes not having to abide by the same rules. Powerplex lost his sister and niece in Chicago, yet no one faced justice for that, nor did there appear to be a public statement from Invincible.
The GDA likely offered an explanation and protected the protagonist, but not having to face a trial or even the media makes it understandable why people would be upset with superheroes. To make matters worse, Scott Duvall (Powerplex) was also aware of Invincible's villainous attack on the Pentagon in season 3 since he works for the GDA, meaning he's also aware the hero went unpunished. Watching Mark continuously disregard the law - regardless of his heroism - is reasonably frustrating, and given he was unintentionally involved in the deaths of Scott's family, the villain's resentment is justifiable.
Scott Tried To Get Justice The Right Way Before Becoming Powerplex
Unlike Other Villains, Scott Didn't Immediately Rush To Crime
Although Scott's transformation into Powerplex is understandable, he didn't instantly turn to crime and instead tried to get justice legally. He approached the District Attorney and presented her with a petition that had over 3,000 signatures, simply requesting an investigation or trial about Invincible's role in the Chicago massacre. Despite the DA offering some mild sympathy, she claimed there was nothing she could do, proving Scott's attempt to get answers was fruitless. Only after being ignored did Scott turn to villainy, and he still tried to show remorse by making it clear his problem was solely with Invincible.
Aaron Paul voices Powerplex in Invincible season 3.
Even after becoming a supervillain and adopting the Powerplex moniker, he still avoided going on a rampage right away. In a last-ditch effort to try and get some kind of justice that avoided collateral damage, Powerplex took to the streets and demanded a confrontation with Invincible before Shapesmith arrived. The villain tried to talk the Guardians of the Globe member down and claimed he didn't want to fight, but Shapesmith punched first. As a result, Powerplex accidentally injured the hero, once again showing sympathy as his intention was never to hurt anyone other than Invincible, who he felt was guilty.
While Scott can still be condemned for his methods, the lack of action from governing officials or the GDA makes it understandable why he had to make some noise for any justice to actually happen.
While Scott can still be condemned for his methods, the lack of action from governing officials or the GDA makes it understandable why he had to make some noise for any justice to actually happen. He shouldn't have taken things into his own hands, but his grief undeniably played a big role in his actions, and he only turned to crime after a more peaceful solution fell on deaf ears over and over.
Powerplex Was Willing To Risk Everything To Get Justice For His Family
He Was Prepared To Serve Time If It Meant Finally Confronting Invincible
As the episode continued, Powerplex's tragedy only got worse when he risked everything to get some sort of closure. After his first failed attempt to bring Invincible to justice, Scott was ready to give up, but his wife encouraged him to take another swing at things since the memorial for Chicago's victims was coming up. Assuming the protagonist would be there, the two agreed that he should try and confront Invincible again, despite the likelihood of it ending with his arrest. Unfortunately for Scott, Eve opted to take the fight instead of Mark before the Guardians stepped in.

An Ominous Line In Invincible Season 3 Teases Mark Grayson's Dark Future & Possible Death
Invincible season 3 sees King Immortal tell Mark about his future, teasing that one of the biggest Viltrumite weaknesses may get Mark Grayson.
Unsurprisingly, he did end up in the back of a police van, and despite managing to escape, he was ready to accept his fate when he got home, claiming he wouldn't fight the GDA. However, with almost nothing left to lose, Scott and his wife decided to stage a kidnapping, as Powerplex pretended to use his loved ones as bait. Therefore, while villains like Titan use their crime boss status in Invincible to protect their families, Scott is willing to go all the way, risking his freedom and putting his loved ones in harm's way in the pursuit of justice.
Invincible Season 3, Episode 6's Ending Perfectly Capped Off Powerplex's Tragic Journey
The Emotional Ending Proved Just How Much Omni-Man's Attack Impacted Scott's Life
Happy endings have been a rarity so far in Invincible, and Scott Duvall wasn't lucky enough to break this trend. While it seemed to be Becky's idea for her and her son to act as Powerplex's hostages, none of them could have envisioned how it would play out. As planned, Invincible showed up at the secluded location and a fight broke out. Mark managed to get the upper hand and attempted to free Becky but was surprised when she spat in his face, allowing Powerplex to take advantage of the distraction and use all of his power on Mark.
Hauntingly, his attack backfires massively. Although he does succeed in injuring Mark, Scott turns around to see his wife and son incinerated by the electrical blast, with the show opting not to spare the details on such a grizzly sight. Unfortunately, his quest for justice turned into an obsession for revenge and cost him everything. Not only were his sister and niece gone, but now Scott had lost his wife and son all because of his desperation to punish Mark, which ultimately cost his freedom too.

Due to his unique powers, he had to be concealed in a special cell with his movement completely restricted, giving him the worst outcome imaginable. Not only is his grief infinitely stronger, but so is his resentment, and being uncomfortably stuck in prison will only make his hatred worse. Powerplex's story is easily one of Invincible's most tragic tales yet, with Scott losing everything during his pursuit of accountability and closure, making "All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry" one of the show's most depressing episodes yet, despite its immense quality.
