I'm Dying To Know Where To Watch Just Beyond — Why It Was Removed From Disney+ Explained
For you're a fan ofJust Beyond and are wondering where to watch the anthology series, you'll likely be disappointed by the answer. Just Beyond is a series based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series of the same name by R. L. Stine and created by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). Similar to Stine's Goosebumps novels and the '90s television series based on them, each episode tells a different horror-centric story with a new cast of characters and a bend towards younger viewers.
Just Beyond debuted in 2021 to strong reviews, including a favorable score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series also boasted some strong talent with stars like Mckenna Grace and Gabriel Bateman appearing, while Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) served as director of the first episode. However, the show was left in limbo following its first season with fans unsure if there would be more. While cancelation is a possibility for any show, Just Beyond suffered a worse fate that has devastated fans.
Just Beyond Is Not Currently Available For Streaming
The Show Was Removed From Disney+
Despite the fact that Just Beyond premiered on Disney+ as a Disney+ original series, it is no longer available on the platform. However, because it was an exclusive Disney+ piece of content, it is also not available anywhere else for fans to stream. Just Beyond was removed from Disney+ on May 26, 2023, and has been unavailable to stream on any other platforms since then.
The sad truth is, if Just Beyond wasn't performing well enough to remain on Disney+, the studio is not going to have the confidence to release it elsewhere.
While you might think this simply means having to wait longer until Just Beyond becomes available somewhere, the reality is that it is not guaranteed that Just Beyond will be available to watch anywhere in the future. This represents a troubling reality of the streaming world, as these original movies and shows that are created exclusively for certain platforms are not guaranteed to stay there forever. As exclusive content, it is rare for other platforms to license these titles, and it is even rarer for original streaming titles to become available on physical media.
Disney owns Just Beyond, so it is ultimately up to them whether the show is ever seen again. The studio has no obligation to release it in any other way, and with it being two years since the series was removed from Disney+, the backlash from fans doesn't appear to be strong enough to sway any minds over at Disney. The sad truth is, if Just Beyond wasn't performing well enough to remain on Disney+, the studio is not going to have the confidence to release it elsewhere.
Why Disney+ Removed Just Beyond (& A Ton Of Other Shows) From Its Platform
30+ Shows And Movies Were Removed From Disney+
Just Beyond fans are not the only ones angry about losing some of their favorite content from Disney+. When Just Beyond was removed back in May 2023, it was joined by over 30 other movies and TV shows, many of which were Disney+ originals, that suddenly disappeared from the platform. This move was a decision made by the Walt Disney Corporation as part of what is called a "content impairment charge."
A content impairment charge means that Disney sees these shows and movies as no longer being worth what they originally paid to make them or how much they are paying to keep them, but instead of selling them, they simply get rid of them in order to write them off as a loss. According to Deadline, the removal of the Disney+ shows and movies (as well as a number of Hulu titles) resulted in a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion.
In an investor's call leading up to the removal of Just Beyond and these other titles, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy hinted at this strategy (via Deadline):
“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation.”
The mention of "tax write-offs" is becoming a familiar one among movie and TV fans as this has become a strategy adopted by many studios in recent years with decidedly mixed responses. One of the most controversial decisions came with Warner Bros. deciding not to release the superhero movie Batgirland instead write off the finished product, never to be seen by fans.
While the creators and those involved with Just Beyond didn't comment on the removal, there were plenty of other artists whose projects were removed from Disney+ and made unavailable who voiced their displeasure over the situation. Eliza Skinner, head writer on the series Earth to Ned, lamented that she now has no way of viewing the work she created and laments the tactless way this removal was done (via THR):
“It’s part of this overall mindset of the value of art and creativity that like, ‘Wow, you spent all this time on this, then you at least deserve a phone call. You at least deserve to understand a little bit what’s happening with your work. But it’s a whole climate of devaluing.”
One of the most notable removals from Disney+ was the TV series Willow, a sequel series to the 1988 cult fantasy movie starring Warwick Davis. The show only ended its first season months before it was removed. Writer John Bickerstaff lamented the series only getting six months to be seen before seemingly being erased forever. Bickerstaff also suggested that the reasoning given by Disney wasn't the truth (viaCollider):
Before you say tax-write off: these shows have already been released and so can't be a write-off. And in the case of Willow, they own the property outright. The only conclusion is that this is to get out of paying residuals. During a [WGA] strike.
Whether the removal of Just Beyondand other titles can be seen as simply business tactics or a betrayal of art itself, it is certainly a shame that these movies and shows are lost to the fans who loved them with possibly no hope of ever seeing them again.
