I Need More Of Xolo Maridueña's New Superhero Role If He Isn't Playing Blue Beetle In The DCU

Xolo Maridueña may be most famous for his role as Blue Beetle in the DCU, but if that role isn't going to continue, then I need more of Maridueña's new superhero role in Invincible. Maridueña exploded onto the scene with the release of Blue Beetle in 2023, and while the film was tons of fun, it has been stuck in a bizarre place between the old DCEU and the new DCU. Maridueña's future as Blue Beetle is still mysterious, but at least I can count on seeing more of the actor after his debut in Invincible season 3.

Xolo Maridueña has quickly become an incredibly popular and successful actor, with him appearing in projects like Parenthood and Cobra Kai before scoring a big role as the titular hero in Blue Beetle. Blue Beetle was originally made as part of the DCEU, but upon James Gunn taking the reins, it seems to have been adapted into the DCU. Blue Beetle's canon status is still a bit confusing, and while it is possible that Xolo Maridueña could reprise the role in the future, it is better to bet on him returning to his role in Invincible.

Xolo Maridueña's Role In Invincible Season 3 Is Promising After Blue Beetle

He Has Proven Himself Multiple Times Now

Xolo Maridueña has a new role in Invincible season 3, and I can't wait to see more of him in the world of superheroes after his work in Blue Beetle. In the series, Maridueña actually plays two characters, with these being Fightmaster and Dropkick. Although their appearance is small in their first Invincible season 3 episode, their role in the series has instantly gotten its hooks into me. The mystery surrounding what Maridueña's characters are up to is incredibly intriguing, and I hope that Maridueña gets a bigger spotlight with these characters in the future.

Maridueña's Blue Beetle role showed that the actor had a lot of promise playing superheroes, but Invincible season 3 switches things up by having him play two villains. Thes scene that Fightmaster and Dropkick are in sees the duo facing off against Invincible and Rex Splode, painting them as villains. However, their motivations are never fully explained, meaning that the duo's true nature will most likely be revealed in the future. Since Maridueña plays the characters, it is doubtful that they are one-offs, with them potentially appearing again in a future episode.

Invincible Season 3 Sets Up A Big Mystery With Xolo Maridueña's Characters

Why Do They Want The Declaration Of Independence?

Xolo Maridueña's Fightmaster and Dropkick are two of Invincible season 3's most mysterious characters, with their episode leaving the audience hanging. In the episode, Mark is alerted that two individuals are in Washington D.C. and attempting to steal the Declaration of Independence, with him and Rex Splode heading there to stop them. While fighting Fightmaster and Dropkick, Multi-Paul attacks, with him seeking revenge for his belief that they let Dupli-Kate die. Dupli-Kate eventually shows up, putting an end to the fight.

During the chaos that Multi-Paul causes, Fightmaster and Dropkick manage to escape. They grab the Declaration of Independence, hop onto their hovercraft, and fly away, disappearing into the sky. Fightmaster and Dropkick haven't reappeared again as of the first three episodes of Invincible season 3, and I'm still unsure why they wanted to steal the Declaration of Independence. While the comics do offer an explanation, the show will undoubtedly return to Fightmaster and Dropkick soon.

Is Xolo Maridueña Still Blue Beetle In The DCU?

Or Is The Movie Not Canon?

According to James Gunn and others, Xolo Maridueña will still be playing Blue Beetle in the DCU. It hasn't been revealed if Blue Beetle will appear in another live-action movie anytime soon, creating a mystery of when the character will pop up again. However, Maridueña has confirmed that a Blue Beetle animated TV series is in development, with the actor reprising his titular role. So, while all of the Blue Beetle movie may not be canon to the DCU, Maridueña's take on the character will continue to exist in this universe.

Because of this, Invincible season 3 isn't the only animated superhero project that we'll get to see Maridueña in. I am incredibly excited to see Maridueña reprise his role in Invincible season 3 and in the Blue Beetle animated series, as he has proven to be an excellent voice actor and superhero performer. While it isn't known how far off the Blue Beetle series is, it is likely that Fightmaster and Dropkick will reappear in Invincible season 3, meaning that it shouldn't be long until we get to see more of Maridueña's work.
