I Think I've Figured Out Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again Trailer Is Hiding The Death Of A Major Character In Plain Sight And You're Not Ready
The first trailer for Daredevil: Born Againhas convinced me Marvel is hiding a massive character death in plain sight. As the release date of Daredevil: Born Again inches closer, my excitement is only growing for the Disney+ show. The decision to reverse earlier plans and make Daredevil: Born Again a continuation of the Netflix show was an excellent move and has only increased my anticipation to see The Man Without Fear back in the MCU against his former nemesis, Kingpin.
Daredevil: Born Again's trailer was released in January 2025, revealing key plot details from Kingpin's election as New York's mayor to Matt Murdock's vigilante retirement and subsequent revival as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. Another element that the trailer provided a first look for was Daredevil: Born Again's cast. The return of major actors from the Netflix show brought a smile to my face, as it likely did with many others familiar with their characters. However, the trailer has me more worried than ever that a massive Daredevil: Born Again death is being hidden, one that would change the show irreparably.
Foggy’s Fate In Daredevil: Born Again Has Been Unclear For A While
No One Knows What Awaits The Best Friend Of Matt Murdock
The character death in question is that of Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock's best friend. Firstly, though, it is worth exploring the background elements of Daredevil: Born Again that make me think the character will meet a grim fate. In October 2023, Marvel announced an overhaul of the studio's MCU TV shows after various behind-the-scenes problems. One of the shows impacted by this overhaul was Daredevil: Born Again, which saw several original writers and directors replaced by the current team overseeing the project's development.
One of the reasons behind this overhaul was the direction in which the original story for Daredevil: Born Again was heading. Various reports indicated that the show was attempting to retcon several elements so as to distance the MCU show from the then-non-canon Netflix Defenders timeline. One of these changes was reportedly the death of both Karen Page and Foggy Nelson off-screen, two-thirds of the central trio from Netflix's Daredevil. Although this is still conjecture, comments about the new direction for Daredevil: Born Again have seemingly supported the rumors.
At Galaxy Con in 2024, Charlie Cox spoke to Redditor CorptanSpecklez, indicating that Foggy's actor Elden Henson was originally not planned to be part of the rebooted show. Henson apparently filmed a brief cameo to give one final link between the Netflix show and Daredevil: Born Again before the latter went in a new direction. Cox insisted has been changed for the upcoming Marvel TV show, yet the rumors that Foggy was killed off in the original draft seem more true than ever.
Daredevil: Born Again’s Trailer Worries Me That Foggy Will Still Die
Little Of Foggy's New MCU Role Has Been Outlined
With these initial reports in mind, Daredevil: Born Again's first trailer did not do much to ease my worries that Foggy will live on in the new version of the show. In the two-minute trailer, Foggy is only shown once. This appearance comes as Kingpin is heard telling Matt that he has "come up in the world," as a shot shows Matt, Karen, and Foggy walking down a New York street together. After that, Foggy is not shown again, despite many more scenes involving Matt, Karen, The Punisher, and Kingpin from the original Daredevil cast being shown.
What further worries me that Foggy will be killed in the show are the reveals from Daredevil: Born Again's set photos. In these set photos, Elden Henson was only captured filming this same scene from the trailer, wearing the same clothes and in the same location as the aforementioned New York street. All of this could mean that the plan of killing Foggy was carried over to Daredevil: Born Again, even potentially tying to the line from Matt Murdock that "a line was crossed" that stopped him from being Daredevil for a while.
Could Foggy's Death Still Work In Daredevil: Born Again?
Naturally, the biggest question spinning out of this pseudo-theory is whether Foggy's death could work as part of Daredevil: Born Again's story. On one hand, this plot point would undoubtedly disappoint a lot of people, specifically those like myself who love the original Daredevil series. The popularity of the original show and the desire for Daredevil: Born Again to be a continuation of that means similarly continuing the elements of the former that worked, such as the trio of Matt, Karen, and Foggy. Removing one of these vital pieces of the show is a big risk and may dishearten a large group of viewers.
Foggy could appear in flashbacks and be tied to Matt's story throughout the show...
Conversely, there is still a way Daredevil: Born Again could make Foggy's death work. It is clear that some time has passed between the events of Daredevil season 3 and Daredevil: Born Again. As such, Foggy could appear in flashbacks and be tied to Matt's story throughout the show, just as flashbacks to various events were used extensively to deepen the character arcs of the titular character in Daredevil. If the character of Foggy is respected and the death is handled well, Daredevil: Born Again could make this tragic outcome work.
