"I Was Really Upset": Alan Ritchson Candidly Agrees With Reacher Season 2 Criticisms

Reacherstar Alan Ritchson addresses the criticisms of season 2, particularly calling out the show's fight scenes. Reacher season 3 debuts on Prime Video with three episodes on Thursday, February 20. Based on the Persuader novel by author Lee Child, the latest chapter will see the titular ex-military man in lone wolf mode as he faces off against foes from his past. It comes after the adaptation's season 2 was criticized for widening the narrative's scope and also for its lackluster action.

In comments to The Movie Podcast, Ritchson addressed some of the criticisms about the fights in season 2. The actor's remarks come as part of a larger point, in which he discussed some aspects of the series that he disliked. That transitioned into his thoughts about the second installment's action and candid criticisms about how the scenes played out, which can be read below:

“Season two, I wasn't really thrilled with a lot of the action at all. I was really upset with where some of those fights were executed. We didn't do a good job on the day. We're using the right tools. It wasn't cut very well.”

What The Reacher Season 2 Criticisms Mean For The Show

It Lacked Inspiration

The criticism around Reacher season 2 can generally be split up into two camps. The first is that, by focusing so much on Jack's backstory and giving him a group of friends, the storytelling decision took away some of the mystique and characterization that the protagonist has in the novel. But when it came to the fight scenes in particular, many felt that the group of heroes was too overpowered and that most of the action set pieces lacked the energy and inventiveness of the first installment.

Reacher Season 3: Why Paulie Is Such an Important Character

Paulie is set to make his debut in Reacher season 3, and he's a very important character in the original novels.

As a way of addressing the first complaint, perhaps, season 3 adds Olivier Richters as the villain Paulie. Many of the reviews for the new episode praise the Dutch bodybuilder's addition to the Reacher season 3 cast, noting that it's fun to see Ritchson square up against someone considerably bigger than him. But for the more general complaint that the action lacked spark and looked fairly standard, it is at least encouraging that Ritchson is aware of the criticism and speaks to it directly.

It's Better To Wait For What Season 3 Does

The early reception of Reacher season 3 is positive. Given that Prime Video is moving forward with a weekly release release model outside of the first three episodes, there will be a lot of time to take in each episode and track the way the fighting has either improved or remained stagnant. But, hopefully, Ritchson's candidness is a sign of things to come.
