If Shadow Gets A Spinoff After Sonic 3, It Needs To Learn This Lesson From Knuckles

Shadow should absolutely get a spinoff after stealing the show in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but it would need to be different from the series' other spinoff. After teasing the character in the post-credits scene of Sonic 2, Keanu Reeves officially debuted his version of Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The story of Sonic 3 begins with Shadow escaping from Prison Island in Tokyo Bay, Japan, and wreaking havoc on the city. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are recruited by the Guardian Unit of Nations to take on Shadow, but quickly realize the Black Blur is far too powerful.

Shadow is one of the primary antagonists in the film, but eventually has a change of heart and sides with Sonic to take down Gerald Robotnik at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Shadow seemingly dies on the space station during the action-packed climax of the movie, but the second post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 thankfully reveals that he survived. Therefore, a Shadow spinoff was set up quite nicely by Sonic 3. However, a Shadow spinoff would have to learn from Knuckles, the series' previous spinoff, and be a movie rather than a show.

Shadow's Spinoff Should Be A Movie, Not A TV Show Like Knuckles

Shadow's Spinoff Makes More Sense As A TV Show

Knuckles' arc in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was similar to Shadow's in the third film. For most of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Knuckles was the villain of the movie alongside Jim Carrey's Ivo Robotnik. However, Knuckles realizes his actions are wrong near the end of Sonic 2 and helps Sonic and Tails take down Ivo at the end of the movie. Knuckles was a standout character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which led to a spinoff television series centered on him debuting on Paramount+ in April 2024.

Since the villain of Sonic 2 received his own standalone project, it would make sense for Shadow to get a spinoff after the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic 3 already showed glimpses of Shadow's origin, but exactly where in space he came from and what he will do after the events of the film could be explored in a spinoff. However, the spinoff should not be a television show, like Knuckles was, since Shadow is a character who deserves his own movie.

Knuckles' Spinoff Show Proves Why A Shadow Series Could Struggle

A Shadow Spinoff Shouldn't Try To Replicate Knuckles' Show

The story of Knuckles' spinoff show follows the titular echidna as he adjusts to life on Earth and takes on Wade Whipple, who is played by Adam Pally in the Sonic movies, as his apprentice. In the show, Knuckles teaches Wade the ways of the Echidna as they travel to Reno, Nevada for a bowling tournament. The show pairs Knuckles with Wade to drive the narrative forward. However, this strategy wouldn't work as well for a Shadow spinoff, since there are no human characters he currently has a connection to.

In the video games, Shadow was created by Gerald Robotnik, which is why Sonic 3 features them working together. However, Gerald seemingly dies at the end of Sonic 3 along with his grandson, Ivo. Therefore, pairing Shadow with any of the other human characters for a spinoff show would feel forced. Since that isn't an option, making the Shadow spinoff a television show isn't a good idea since not including a human character in a significant role would cost too much money. Since a television show would have to have a smaller budget, the Shadow spinoff should be a movie.

A Shadow Spinoff Movie Could Be A Big Hit After Sonic 3

A Shadow Movie Would Be Much More Exciting Than A Show

Knuckles is a very popular character from the Sonic video games, but Shadow is without a doubt one of the most well-known characters from the franchise. Therefore, even though Knuckles only received a television show, it is clear that Shadow is popular enough to warrant a movie. Furthermore, Keanu Reeves headlining a Shadow movie would create a lot more buzz than a TV show. Reeves has been praised for his portrayal of Shadow, so it would be great to see him return for a standalone movie.

Sonic 3 did not reveal where in space Shadow came from, so a Shadow movie could answer this question.

Furthermore, the Shadow spinoff having the budget of a movie would allow the film to properly explore the character without any restrictions. Sonic 3 did not reveal where in space Shadow came from, so a Shadow movie could answer this question. This could lead the film to introducing characters like Black Doom, who is a villain in the video games and technically Shadow's biological father. Overall, there are lots of directions a Shadow spinoff could go in, but it is clear that it should be a movie following the overwhelmingly positive response to the character in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
