If You Want to Watch a New Anime, Please - Don't Sleep On the Best Show of 2016

With so many anime to choose from, it’s easy for series to get overlooked, especially if they don’t leave a lasting impression early on. However, those who may have skipped Bungo Stray Dogs when it first aired in 2016 are missing out on one of the most compelling shows of the past decade. While it starts out as a deceptively lighthearted series, it evolves into a gritty supernatural action and psychological drama.

At first glance, Bungo Stray Dogs might appear to be just another action-packed shonen filled with comedic moments and special abilities, but there is a lot more going on beneath the surface. Although early episodes focus on introducing characters and world-building, the narrative deepens with each passing season. Anime fans who overlook Bungo Stray Dogs miss out on the unique premise the story offers and the deeply complex characters who are certain to defy expectations.

Bungo Stray Dogs Has a Compelling Storyline and Complex Characters

Based on the Manga written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa; Anime by BONES

Bungo Stray Dogs begins with a focus on Atsushi Nakajima and his introduction to the Armed Detective Agency, also known as the ADA. Early episodes center around comedic character interactions and world-building, however, later episodes and seasons make up for it as the stakes begin to rise, and darker storytelling elements become involved. The initial pace, while seemingly slow, becomes necessary in building up the relationships and themes that define the series as it transitions to a more serious and compelling narrative.

While the narrative picks up, the characters also evolve from what initially appear to be exaggerated archetypes. For example, Atsushi’s struggles are linked to his past trauma, making his growth throughout the series much more compelling. Whereas Dazai, a member of the ADA, may seem to have a carefree attitude, yet he hides a far deeper and more complex character arc. Each major character is fascinating and intricate, with each arc unveiling a broader picture that remains unsolved.

Anime Fans Who Enjoy Storylines With Dark Undertones Will Love Bungo Stray Dogs

The Anime Doesn’t Shy Away From Heavy and Thought Provoking Themes

While the anime may start out with humor and eccentricities, its core narrative is built upon darker themes with psychological depth. Behind each battle and witty conversation lies a world shaped by tragedy and a blurred sense of good and evil. Heavy themes such as abuse, suicidal ideations, and what it means to be human are woven into the story. Additionally, the narrative examines the consequences of power and violence while showcasing opposing ideologies, with manipulation often playing a major role in the plot.

The anime stands out from others because of its dark themes that shape the world and the characters within it. Rather than relying solely on action or the supernatural, the series builds tension throughout each season and continually raises the stakes. For anime fans looking for thought-provoking characters and narratives with dark themes and undertones, Bungo Stray Dogs is an absolute must-watch.
