Independent Games Festival Reveals Finalists With Winners To Be Announced At GDC In March
The finalists for the Independent Games Festival have been announced, and one title emerged as a key contender with five nominations. The titles include games from independent and solo developers worldwide who might otherwise be overlooked by the gaming community in favor of larger-profile games. The IGF takes place every year at the Games Dev Conference (GDC) in March, but fans can get a sneak peek at the lineup of finalists now.
According to the IGF website, the chosen games were selected from a list of 500+ titles. Each game was decided by a panel of experts for the individual categories, "who chose the finalists after playing, discussing, and meticulously evaluating each of the games in consideration." Winners will be announced at this year's IGF presentation at GDC, on Wednesday, March 19 at 6:30pm PT.

This year, one indie title stands out for having five nominations across seven categories. Consume Me, by Jenny Jiao Hsia, presents the developer's complicated relationship with food, dieting, disordered eating, and everything that entails through a lens of dark humor. Consume Me is joined by Julián Cordero's soccer slice of life Despelote as a top nominee, with four nominations.
The full list of finalists is as follows:

Our Take: The IGF Puts A Spotlight On Otherwise Overlooked Games
It's A Celebration Of Indie Darlings Beyond The Popular
It's interesting which games didn't make it to the finalists, too, as the listings name some honorable mentions. Games like Animal Well, Mouthwashing, Tiny Glade, and many others show up as titles that didn't quite make it through to the final round, despite gaining popularity in the past year. Instead, the list of finalists is largely made up of less well-known titles that are, no doubt, excellent picks.
After watching several games rise to stardom this year on social media and in other awards like The Game Awards, it's nice to see some lesser-known titles talked about. I'm particularly happy to see a few personal favorites make the list, which no one I speak to ever knows about (like The WereCleaner, Children of the Sun, INDIKA, and Despelote, all of which are amazing indie titles in their own way).
The Independent Games Festival is part of GDC 2025, which will be held in San Francisco on March 17-21. Fans not in attendance will be able to tune in to the livestream on the GDC Twitch channel.
