The Knobstone Trail follows the rocky ridges of the Knobstone Escarpment up steep inclines to high, dry bluffs where elegant chestnut oaks thrive, and then into lush valleys filled with redbud and dogwood trees. To hike the entire 45-mile trail, allow at least 3 days and follow the white blazes south from the Spurgeon Hollow trailhead to Deam Lake State Recreation Area, near Louisville, KY . This way, you’ll save the best views (and most elevation gain) for last. Camping is allowed at least 1 mile from trailheads (there are eight) and roads. Streams along the route are dry most of the year, so carry or cache plenty of water. Views from the bluffs near the southern terminus can’t be beat.
Info: in.gov/dnr/knobstone; Go Deep Adventures (812-967-4707) can arrange shuttles and water caches.
-Hike provided by Hoosiers Hikers Council. Event and membership info: hoosiershikerscouncil.org
