Invincible Is Back With Season 3, And It Totally Overlooks a Crucial Comic Moment

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Invincible!A fan-favorite Invinciblemoment has been adapted into the animated series, but fans are questioning one surprising change from the comics. Fans have waited patiently for the newest season and after months of waiting, the third season is here. However, a small change makes a big difference for one key Invincible moment.

In Invincible #52 by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley, the Mauler Twins have taken over a nuclear silo and Mark Grayson heads out to stop them. Once Mark's little brother Oliver hears about the event, he puts on his Kid Omni-Man outfit and races to join Invincible.

During the battle, Oliver lets loose and kills both of the supervillains. Infuriated, Invincible takes his brother into the sky, where Mark discovers that Oliver is starting to reflect their father's attitude towards humanity. Oliver asks Mark point-blank if he ever thinks that Omni-Man was right and Invincible surprisingly says "Sometimes".

Removing One Word Makes All the Difference

Invincible is a streaming show based on the series of the same name, and for the most part, it's been a fairly faithful adaptation. Series co-creator Robert Kirkman helped develop the series and, despite a few changes to the story beats, the animated series has largely followed the plot as seen in the original series. But as seen in the third season episode "You Want a Real Costume, Right?", the series has taken some liberties when adapting pivotal moments. In the animated series, when Oliver asks Mark if he ever thinks Omni-Man was right, Invincible just stands there in silence.

While many of the adaptation's changes have been minimal, this is pretty noticeable and plenty of fans have already expressed bewilderment at the word's removal. Granted, the moment of quiet contemplation could also indicate that, yes, Invincible does actually think his father's more brutal outlook was right. But with the comics, it's such a powerful moment. Up until this point, Invincible has been trying so hard to convince himself and the world that he's nothing like Omni-Man. It’s a key moment that shows that Invincible’s perspective is growing, and taking him to places he never thought he’d go.

One Word Doesn't Change Much, But The Comic Nailed this Moment Better

Those who are familiar with the comic know that Mark Grayson is about to go through some harrowing events and his spirit and morality is about to be tested in major ways. Mark admitting that he sometimes thinks his father was right is a fantastic piece of foreshadowing that sets up the next chapters of Invincible's life. Again, the show doesn't make a major change, but it definitely missed a chance to showcase the darkness Invincible is grappling with.Again, the show has been a very faithful adaptation of the source material and there's no reason to think that what's next for Mark will be any different from the comics. But this one little word carried a lot of weight and really exposed the inner battle that was taking place in Invincible's soul. The show is doing a great job of adapting Invincible, but it just can't beat intense character moments like this one.
