Invincible Just Confirmed Mark Grayson's Biggest Weakness

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episodes 1-3.

Invincible season 3 wasted little time throwing Mark back into action, and while the protagonist has gotten stronger, his main weakness has also been exposed. With Invincible season 2's ending resolving Mark's personal feud with Angstrom Levy, the franchise's central character has turned his attention to the impending Viltrumite invasion, as his training has seen Mark's skills improve dramatically. He is faster, stronger, and tougher than ever, but despite how much he has seemingly progressed, the superhero still has one major weakness, and season 3 has proven just how detrimental it may be going forward.

There is absolutely no doubt that Mark is one of Invincible's most powerful characters, but his fighting technique and attributes are still held back by one crucial flaw that many of his opponents don't possess. As a result, he has come up short in fights he should have won with ease and struggled to reach his full potential, something that has continued into season 3. The new installment's very first episode highlighted that no matter how much the protagonist trains and improves his abilities, his biggest drawback remains an internal one, which he may one day use to his advantage.

Mark’s Biggest Weakness Isn’t His Powers, It’s His Emotions

Invincible's Protagonist Has Frequently Let His Emotions Get The Better Of Him While In Combat

Although Mark can go punch-to-punch with most villains in the series, he still has one big weakness - his emotions. Unlike his father in season 1, who heartlessly killed his supposed allies and slaughtered innocent civilians, Mark remains incredibly emotional, which makes sense considering he is still young. He's only a few years into being a hero and is a recent high school graduate, meaning it's only natural this life would be a big change for him. In addition, he has gone through more trauma than most after Omni-man's betrayal and Angstrom Levy's attack on him and his family.

While his behavior may often be justified, it's also the reason he's much more green than other heroes who don't quite possess the same power. His anger frequently prompts him to attack recklessly, while his humanity has seen him show mercy to his opponents, which they have quickly taken advantage of. These may seem like small things on paper, but they can completely flip the trajectory of a fight, and given Mark's powers in Invincible make him the favorite against almost anyone, he can't allow these flaws to consume him.

Unfortunately, we've already seen this cost him against the likes of Anissa, while it has prompted him to take on challenges that he simply wasn't ready for against Battle Beast and Machine Head's crew. It's even the reason he accidentally lost control against Angstrom Levy at the end of season 2, proving Mark hasn't completely learned to harness his emotions, which continues to cost him dearly, as season 3 has proven.

Mark Almost Losing To Doc Seismic Proves His Emotions Are Still Holding Him Back

Doc Seismic Shouldn't Have Been A Huge Obstacle For Mark Given How Powerful He Is In Season 3

Having defeated Angstrom Levy in season 2's finale, Mark has only gotten more powerful in season 3, suggesting he was well on his way to taking on the Viltrumites. However, episode 3 quickly confirmed it won't be easy, as the protagonist almost ended up losing his life to Doc Seismic, a secondary villain at most who he has beaten several times before. While Seismic seems a lot more powerful in the new season and even managed to capture most of Earth's mightiest heroes, Mark is still a lot stronger, yet his emotions caused him to get caught out.

His concern for Eve is admirable and shows how compassionate Mark is, but it's also what allowed Doc Seismic to flip the fight. Even after he was rescued by Darkwing and the ReAnimen, Mark turned on his saviors due to their past errors, putting the entire fight in jeopardy. There is no denying his heart is in the right place, but with Invincible season 3 likely to introduce some deadly new characters, the protagonist has to learn how to suppress his emotions and turn them into a strength rather than a weakness in order to maximize his qualities.

Mark’s Emotions May Be A Problem, But They Could Also Be His Biggest Strength

Using His Love For Others & Desire To Protect People Could Become A Major Advantage For Mark

Despite how problematic Mark's emotions have been at various times throughout Invincible, it could become one of his greatest attributes if he can learn to control them. Season 2 explored the protagonist's difficulties maintaining his composure, with the sins of his father looming over him. Season 3 seems to be continuing this, but as Mark continues to learn as a hero, he may find a way to flip this flaw into a useful asset. The series has already made it clear Mark's spirit is invincible, and by using his personal feelings to will him on, he'll only get stronger.

New episodes of Invincible season 3 are available every Thursday on Prime Video.

Rather than rushing to save an ally at the first sign of danger, trusting their skills and focusing on the task in front of him could make him even more formidable. Likewise, using the desire to protect his loved ones could help him get up from even the most serious of injuries to take down his opponent, which is an advantage his foes won't have. Mark is undeniably one of Invincible's strongest characters and best fighters, but assuming he learns to be more level-headed and strategic, his passion and good nature could become a devastating weapon, rather than a weakness.
