Invincible Season 3 Brings Back A Tragic Former Villain As Mark's New Ally
Mark has a new ally in Invincible season 3, and it turns out to be a tragic villain from the show's past. The Invincible TV show and comic books are full of villains, with all kinds of recurring characters popping up to cause chaos throughout the three seasons of the Prime Video series. Invincible season 3, episode 1 continues this trend by bringing back a villain from season 2, although his role in the season premiere is far less sinister.

Things go off the rails quickly for Mark, with him discovering some secrets about Cecil Stedman that make him turn against the GDA entirely. Before this, however, Mark spends most of his time training for the Viltrumite invasion of Earth, with Cecil using everything the GDA has to prepare him for battle - including former villains.

The first villain that Mark Grayson faces off against in Invincible season 3's premiere episode is Giant, the colossal red titan who first appeared in season 2. The cycloptic beast is incredibly powerful, with him being able to take hits from Invincible and get back up. However, he possesses the mind of a young child, making him a unique threat to face.
Although Giant made his debut in Invincible season 2 as a proper villain, his role in season 3 is entirely different. It is revealed that Giant is now working for the GDA, with Giant's human parents allowing Cecil to have Giant fight Invincible during training exercises. The GDA takes Giant and Invincible into a deserted area and lets them duke it out, with Giant's strength making him a good way to prepare for the Viltrumite invasion of Earth.

It Is A Tragic Origin Story
Although the Invincible show hasn't properly explained it yet, the comics do provide an origin story for Giant. As it turns out, Giant is a boy who, at around the age of seven or eight, was with his grandmother when they fell through a portal into an alternate dimension. While there, the duo encountered a wizard who cast a spell on the boy. This turned him into Giant, with the wizard hoping he could use Giant for his own bidding. However, Giant rebelled, somehow making it back to his home dimension.
Now, Giant is a proper villain, with him destroying cities during his childish tantrums. While Giant is a massive threat, his backstory is quite tragic, with him being one of the saddest villains in the world of Invincible.
