Invincible Season 3 Image Reveals New Comic Villain, Teasing Next Story Arc
A new image from Invincible season 3 has revealed a new comic villain, teasing the next story arc as Mark (Steven Yeun) faces more challenges in the wake of season 2. Invincible season 2 ended with Mark deciding to quit college and become a full-time superhero, after his family was targeted by Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown). In the meantime, his father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) is being held captive by his fellow Viltrumites, having turned against them after having a child on Thraxa. Season 3 is already shaping up to be more action-packed, while also introducing new heroes and villains.
Now, the official InvincibleTwitter/X account has posted the first image of Powerplex, a new antagonist set to be introduced in season 3. The character dons a black and red suit that's accurate to his comic counterpart, with electricity flowing all across his body as he raises his hand up. He also has a determined look on his face, signaling there's a confrontation happening during this particular scene. Check out the new image below:
What Powerplex's Appearance Means For Invincible Season 3
The Character Has An Important Comic History
Powerplex was first introduced in Invincible #59 as a villain whose signature ability is electrokinesis, the ability to create and control electricity. He's also able to absorb energy, while also not getting injured due to his durable body, alongside the ability to fly. In the comics, his motivation stems from losing family during Omni-Man's attack on Chicago, taking his anger out on Mark for what happened. Invincible season 3 will see him introduced, potentially involving a similar backstory to his comic counterpart.
The new villain will be one of multiple changes coming to Mark's life this season, including him getting a new, black and blue suit, aligning with his upcoming character arc. Since the series has continually shifted around when different stories in the comic take place, it's unclear when he'll first encounter Powerplex. It's even possible the villain interacts with other characters in Invincibleseason 3 before he even meets the protagonist. How big a challenge he'll be for the titular hero, however, remains to be seen.
Invincible has already been renewed for season 4 by Prime Video.
Our Take On Powerplex's Role During Invincible Season 3
His Appearance Is Influenced By Omni-Man's Actions
By fighting Mark for the actions of his father, Powerplex's appearance will be a reminder that Omni-Man's past actions still harmed hundreds of thousands of people. Although he's begun showing remorse for what he's done, it can't absolve him of the lives he took away, with the new villain being a constant reminder of that day. How Invincible season 3 will handle his appearance remains to be seen, but his complex reasons for his antagonism may simply result in more pain.
Invincible season 3 premieres Thursday, February 6 on Prime Video.
