Unusually for a show aimed primarily at kids, the second episode of Pixar’s new streaming show Win or Lose decides to focus on the life of a teacher. For the whole 20 minutes of "Blue," the series pans back from the softball square and follows Frank, a socially awkward perfectionist who loves his job teaching children, but is also lovesick over a colleague he broke up with before the events of the show. Luckily, a mysterious friend called Francis is on hand to help him get over his broken heart.

Partway through the episode, after Frank has finished speaking with two of his students, Win or Lose’s transgender protagonist Kai and their friend Rochelle, Francis appears from behind the classroom door, holding a sponge. He appears to be cleaning, but seems more intent on getting involved in Frank’s love life. He promptly downloads a dating app, and encourages Frank to move on from his romantic woes. Francis appears twice more in the episode, each time to give Frank a further push with matters of the heart.

The sudden appearance of Francis from a shadowy corner of the classroom presents him as a mysterious figure in Frank’s world. He may even be imaginary, since no one else seems to see him during the episode. However, it’s clear from the sponge he’s holding, the overalls he’s wearing, and the cleaning trolley that he pushes out of the room that Francis is the janitor at the school where Frank works.

The veneer of mystery around him may simply be because he slips by unnoticed by most people in the school, as he moves around the building doing the work that no one else will do. This work includes mopping the school corridor, which causes Frank to slip and fly into the air during the final moments of the episode.

It actually feels as though Francis is Frank’s guardian angel of sorts, dropped into the episode to save him from loneliness and despair.

On the one hand, this seems like the realistic approach of one friendly colleague to another. As Francis says to Frank, “I’m your wingman, I’m not leaving…” But, on the other hand, there is definitely something otherworldly about Francis, from how he appears and disappears in sudden bursts of movement to the way he seems invisible to everyone but Frank.

Francis’ final act of support for Frank is to mop the floor in front of him as he slides out of control towards the door.
