"It Insists Upon Itself": Seth MacFarlane Explains The Origin Of Viral Family Guy Meme 19 Years Later

Seth MacFarlane explains the origin of one of Family Guy's most iconic lines. The adult animated series has been on air since 1999, running consistently for most of that time except when it was cancelled twice (after seasons 2 and 3). Now, the show is hosted by Fox and will return for Family Guy season 23 on Sunday, February 16. MacFarlane created the series and stars as the lead voice actor in the show, with a cast that includes Seth Green, Mila Kunis, Alex Borstein, Mike Henry, and Patrick Warburton.

Speaking on X, MacFarlane explains the origin of one of Family Guy's most often-memed sequences.

Reposting a video of Peter's Godfather line, the Family Guy creator explained that the wording "it insists upon itself" had a real-life inspiration. The creator's college film history professor used these words to describe The Sound of Music, which the instructor found to be overrated. While MacFarlane maintained that this professor was a "first-rate teacher," he said he "never quite followed that one."

What This Means For Family Guy

This Scene Is From Season 4

The origin of this line comes from Family Guy season 4, episode 27, "The Griffin Family History." When Peter and his family get stuck in their panic room as robbers invade their home, Peter decides to narrate their family history and all the secrets included therein. One of his last "secrets" is admitting to Lois, Stewey, Chris, and Brian that he did not like the movie The Godfather. This shocks his family, who stands up for the film's merit. Defending his stance, Peter says that The Godfather "insists upon itself."

Peter never really explains what he means by this line, despite his family asking him to clarify. For years, it has been a classic Family Guy meme and is often read as a jab at pretentious film critics. In the context of MacFarlane's inspiration, it seems that the line is indeed some knock on the world of film criticism. The line is based on an actual film historian MacFarlane encountered, and even if he had an affection for said person, he seemed to remember it as a goofy statement.

Our Take On The Beloved Family Guy Line

The Real-Life Inspiration Makes It Even Better

The fact that this Family Guy line was a quote from a real person makes it even better. The implication becomes that Peter is parroting a pseudo-intellectual line he may have recycled from somewhere else. This makes his family's bafflement at him even more amusing because the character is indeed spouting off whatever he wants to say. Family Guy's baseless Godfather criticism will remain one of the most memorable moments from the show even as the series heads into season 23.
