It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia & Abbott Elementary Crossover Trailer Finally Reveals Season 17 Release Date

An It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary crossover trailer finally reveals a season 17 release date. This past January, the two sitcoms, both set in the City of Brotherly Love, aired the first part of their crossover event in Abbot Elementary season 4, episode 9, "Volunteers." The episode sees the Gang – consisting of Charlie (Charlie Day), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) – performing court-ordered community service at the disadvantaged elementary school in Philadelphia.

Now, FX Networks has released a trailer for the second part of the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary crossover. The episode will follow the same events, but from the Gang's viewpoint. In the trailer, the Gang steals treats from the teachers' lounge, Mac swipes a brownie from a kid, Charlie attempts to form a boy band, and the Gang frustrates Janine (Quinta Brunson) so much that she ends up punching a locker. The first part of the crossover event saw the Gang volunteering at Abbott Elementary. However, it turned out to be court-ordered community service for misdemeanor pollution charges. As an Abbott Elementary episode, the first part was very much centered around the teachers' perspective, who debated kicking them out, but decided to let them stay since they're in desperate need of volunteer work, and began exploiting the Gang for free labor. The second part of the crossover will cover the same story through the Gang's perspective, which is sure to be less wholesome.

The trailer also reveals that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17's release date is July 9, with the second part of the crossover being the first episode of the season. Overall, according to the official synopsis, season 17 has been dubbed "The Gang Embraces The Corporate Era," and will focus on "how greed and the New American Dream have consumed Paddy's Pub." The synopsis continues, saying that the Gang will "exploit cross-network promotion to increase market share," referring to the Abbot Elementary crossover and poking fun at its own niche place in pop culture.

Our Take On The It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia & Abbott Elementary Crossover Trailer

It Risks Being A Rehash

While seeing the same story play out from the Gang's perspective could offer a new layer of chaos and humor, it also risks feeling like a rehash of what viewers already saw on Abbott Elementary. A more interesting idea might have been sending the teachers to Paddy's Pub, where they would have to navigate the Gang's toxic antics on their own turf. Still, fans of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia should expect plenty of outrageous and on-brand comedy in part two.
