"It's Infinite": Stardew Valley Fans Share Incredibly Useful Tips They Wished They'd Known Sooner

One newcomer to Stardew Valley asked the community for advice on starting the game, and several long-time fans have provided their most important takeaways. The cozy farming game has evolved a lot since its release in 2016, providing hours of entertainment for players. Although the title makes it easy for beginners to start, there is so much to discover that some fans might still be intimidated.

As a beginner to the game, Reddit user weirdboiXD asked, "What's something you wish you [knew] sooner when progressing in Stardew Valley?" The responses include a mix of practical tips and wholesome reminders to help anyone enjoy the game.

Stardew Valley Players Give Their Best Advice To Beginners

Some Of This Advice Is Useful Even For Veteran Players

The Stardew Valley community has some very practical tips to give new players. Among the most useful tips are the following:

  • Not to donate rare items like the prismatic shard and dino egg, and instead use them to make the best weapon in the game, and to incubate a dinosaur (then donate one of their eggs).
  • Get as many strawberry seeds as possible during the first Spring festival and plant and water them immediately.
  • Many repetitive tasks, like petting animals and watering plants, can be completed faster by holding the action button down.
  • Collect hardwood and plant hardwood trees early in the game.
  • The "grass" that grows naturally on the farm is not the same grass that animals can eat and has to be planted separately.
  • It's possible to place torches on things like sprinklers and fences, making it easier to get around at night.
  • Instead of buying decor items in the beginning, players should save up for catalogues that provide the same items for free.

One often-overlooked bit of information was shared by Syy_Guy, who tells beginners to "keep your eyes peeled for 3 squiggly lines popping up out of the ground. Use your hoe on them." This isn't explained until later in the game but can provide players with farming experience and some very useful items like seeds early in the game.

User grey_ushanka also gives a tip that many players didn't know even after they'd been playing for a long time, stating: "When the copper pan is unlocked, it can be worn as a hat, and taken off only when it needs to be used as a tool." This saves the player a free slot in their inventory. If they don't like the look, they can instead place the pan onto their horse as a hat.

Our Take: There Is No "Right" Way To Play Stardew Valley

The Best Advice Is To Just Enjoy The Game

The most important advice Stardew Valley players can get is not a gameplay tip or an in-game secret. Reddit user ttvANX1ETYZ_ has valuable advice for anyone, regardless of how far into the game they've already gotten:

"Something I still wish I could learn is that you don’t have a time limit, just because the days are only ten minutes or so you don’t have to feel rushed all the time, it’s infinite."

The passing of time can sometimes feel constraining, but as Redditor Extreme-Pea854 points out, the time mechanic is only an illusion and has no actual bearing on the game besides seasons. They say that a big draw for them is that "there are no consequences to not completing a task. Pick up a bulletin quest and don’t get it done? No worries! Take 3 years to do a quest from the mail? That’s fine, complete it whenever."

It may sometimes feel like there's too much to do in Stardew Valley and not enough time to get it all done. Besides farming and getting to know the locals, the game also has dungeons to explore, fish to hunt, artifacts to collect, quests to complete, new areas to unlock, secrets to uncover and so much more. But at the end of the day, players can completely ignore any aspect of the game they're not interested in, allowing anyone to enjoy Stardew Valleyin any way they want.
