It's The Perfect Time To Rewatch Ke Huy Quan's Oscar Winning Film Before His New 2025 Action Movie

Everything Everywhere All At Oncewas the immensely popular Best Picture-winning comedy that re-introduced Ke Huy Quan to audiences after his starring role in The Goonies back in 1985. Throughout his Oscar campaign, Quan made it very clear that he’s struggled to find work in the years since his childhood success. Everything Everywhere All At Once was the project that allowed Ke to finally step back into the spotlight and earn an Academy Award. Quan delivered one of the best performances of the entire A24 catalog, and thankfully, the actor’s career has finally been revitalized.

Ke Huy Quan’s latest movie Love Hurts will mark the Oscar winner’s first leading role, and the project seems full of potential. Love Hurts' story follows an undercover criminal posing as a realtor who finds himself drawn back into his old life when he receives word that his old colleague may not be dead after all. It’s a high-octane adventure through dangerous conspiracies and brutal hitmen, produced by David Leitch of Bullet Train and The Fall Guy. The project should help Ke Huy Quan overcome his post-Oscars slump and step into the spotlight once more.

Everything Everywhere All At Once Revitalized Ke Huy Quan's Career

It Took A While For The Actor To Become A Star

Ke Huy Quan first made a name for himself thanks to his supporting role in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where he played Indy's young sidekick, Short Round. While he received universal acclaim for this entertaining role, it wasn’t long before Quan found himself shut out of Hollywood and unfairly reduced to just another childhood star. Despite another well-liked role in The Goonies, Quan failed to launch his acting career as he’d dreamed - until decades later when Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan approached him to star in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Everything Everywhere was an immediate success, and its awards campaign was a huge event that ultimately led to the film winning Best Picture in 2023. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Quan’s charming comeback story also captured hearts around the world and led to him winning an individual Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Although Quan hadn’t appeared in that many movies throughout his career, he became a superstar overnight all thanks to Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Everything Everywhere effortlessly blends the sci-fi, fantasy, action, and comedy genres to create something wholly fresh and new.

From the dynamic action choreography to the touching family drama, everything about this film feels incredibly authentic.

Unsurprisingly, Everything Everywhere All At Once is aging incredibly well and remains one of the best movies of the 2020s so far. From the dynamic action choreography to the touching family drama, everything about this film feels incredibly authentic. Everything Everywhere has the kind of mass appeal that’s rarely seen in such overt genre films, which surely contributed to its historic Best Picture win.

Everything Everywhere All At Once Shows Why Love Hurts Is So Exciting For Ke Huy Quan

Love Hurts Could Be Quan's Much-Needed Comeback Project

Although Love Hurts isn’t Ke Huy Quan’s first project since his Oscars success (he appeared in a supporting role in Loki season 2), it’s the most exciting. The project is a full-on action spectacle, allowing Quan to fully let loose with some sharp choreography and dynamic set pieces. Incidentally, this is part of the reason he was so unstoppable in Everything Everywhere All At Once - the actor has such a large, infectious energy that works perfectly in large-scale action sequences, but also in the film’s quieter and intimate scenes.

Ultimately, Love Hurts should be the perfect opportunity for Ke Huy Quan to prove that Everything Everywhere All At Once wasn’t a fluke. He’s one of the most exciting and charismatic actors working today, particularly thanks to his dedication to stunt choreography and action sequences, which makes him perfect for this new project. He can perfectly capture the cartoonish energy of David Leitch’s action comedies while bringing a more grounded, emotional aspect to his character too.
