James Gunn Shares Update On His Next DCU Project After Superman & Peacemaker Season 2

James Gunn has commented on his next DC Universe project. As the creative chief of DC Studios, Gunn has a role to play in every new project the comic book giant envisions for the big and small screens. However, he has gone beyond that, as the DCU's Chapter One begins with three projects created by Gunn. He wrote and directed the TV-MA animated series Creature Commandos, the DCU's first overall project, David Corenswet's Superman, the franchise's first movie, which premieres in July, and Peacemaker season 2. Instead of slowing down, Gunn is already working on a new DC project.

On Threads, James Gunn said he is already "pre-writing" the DC Studios project he takes on after Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

The DC Studios co-CEO did not specify whether his upcoming DC project would be a movie or a TV show. However, before he revealed he was dedicating "a fair amount" of his time to the project, he had already commented on the pre-writing stage and might have offered a clue as to what it was. Last December, Gunn was asked by a fan on Threads when he would write his next movie, which Gunn said he was pre-writing.

What James Gunn’s Next DC Project Could Be?

The Director Is Wasting No Time At DC

James Gunn has cemented himself as one of the best creators of superhero adaptations. From Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to DC's Creature Commandos, every superhero project written and directed by Gunn has found an audience and received mostly positive reviews. That explains why he is taking so much on his shoulders as the DCU gets started. After the DCEU's issues, DC needs to turn things around. Gunn directing another movie in the DCU's Chapter One after Supermanwould be a great way of boosting the franchise's start.

Based on how Gunn's December 2024 comment about pre-writing a DC project was related to a fan asking him when he would pen his next movie, it is easy to assume that is what is in play. DC Studios has announced a few movies for the DCU's Chapter One. While a few of them have directors in place, like Swamp Thing and Batman's The Brave and the Bold, others are free to take on. Based on that list, The Authority, a movie focused on a hardcore team of anti-heroes that should feature Superman's The Engineer, seems perfect for Gunn.

Other Movies Also Make Sense For Gunn

I think The Authority is perfect for Gunn, as it once again features a complicated team that must band together. That is right up his alley. Adding to it is the fact that The Authority will likely be R-rated, fitting Gunn's DC projects so far, and Gunn could be setting it up by including The Engineer in Superman. That said, Gunn's talents for teams and comedy could make him a great choice to direct the reported Teen Titans movie. Gunn's experience with bloody action also makes it possible for his next DCU project to be the Deathstroke and Bane film.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
