Jared Padalecki & Walker Showrunner Reunite For New Medical Series
Jared Padalecki has reunited with Walkershowrunner Anna Fricke for a new medical drama series. Padalecki played ranger Cordell Walker for all four seasons of The CW show and was an executive producer. Padalecki also executive produced the Walker: Independence spinoff series, with Fricke serving as the showrunner. More recently, Padaleck starred in a three-episode arc of CBS' Fire Country and is involved in a developing spinoff of that series.
As reported by Deadline, Padalecki and Fricke are teaming up for a currently untitled CBS medical drama series that will take place in Texas. Padalecki will play a courageous and committed doctor who has an unconventional and improvisational style of treating his patients in a rural area. He will work out of a mobile clinic alongside a young doctor looking for a fresh start. This new project will not influence his Fire Country: Surfside spinoff series, which is still in the early stages of development.
What This Means For Jared Padalecki's New Show
It Can Reach New And Familiar Audiences
After the cancelation of Walker season 5, seeing Padalecki and Fricke teaming up for a brand-new series is the next best thing. The two creatives have a successful history of working together over the course of multiple series, which will undoubtedly continue in their new show. Padalecki and Fricke can translate some of Walker's best elements into their next show while also making it distinct from their experience creating a contemporary western story.
Beyond being a Walker reunion, one of the greatest selling points for the new show is it being a rural medical drama. The majority of medical dramas are set in urban areas and often in large hospitals. Padalecki's character working via a mobile clinic in rural Texas is a stark juxtaposition from this. It creates the potential for the series to reach a wider range of audiences than the standard medical drama normally does. The doctor Padalecki is working with will likely bring a great deal of intrigue to the story as well, since she is running from her past.
Our Take On Jared Padalecki's New Show
It Has Several Promising Elements Despite One Overused Trope
From House to Zachary Quinto's Brilliant Minds, there is no shortage of great medical drama series about doctors treating their patients through unorthodox approaches. The rest of the premise does sound more unique, though, and will help the series stand out from its competition. The casting choice for the doctor working with Padalecki's character could also help create further anticipation once she is announced. However, the most compelling part is the Walker reunion of Padalecki and Fricke, who have proven to be an effective team that can sustain an engaging story throughout multiple seasons.
