Junior Doctors Protest at Lalbazar, Demand Resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner

Kolkata: The indefinite strike by junior government doctors at outdoor patient departments (OPDs) entered its 25th day on Monday, with the protesting medics escalating their demonstrations by laying siege to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. They are demanding the resignation of City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, accusing him of failing to prevent the vandalism that occurred at R G Kar Hospital on August 14.

According to an UNI report, the Mamata Banerjee government has called a special two-day Assembly session starting Monday to table and pass a proposed bill to seek capital punishment for a convict in rape and murder of the women.

The ongoing protests, which involve medics and various citizens, are fueled by the brutal murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Hospital on August 9.

The medics are also demanding the suspension of R G Kar Hospital's former principal Sandip Ghosh, one of the suspects in the crime and also a suspect in an alleged financial scam in the institution.

The CBI, probing the twin cases following Calcutta High Court orders, continued its questioning of Ghosh on Monday. The former chief of the hospital has already undergone a lie detector test and face CBI interrogators for 15 days, news agency UNI reported.

The federal agency also summoned the hospital's former superintendent Akhtar Ali, whose allegation and subsequent PIL led to the court ordering a CBI to probe into the alleged financial irregularities under Ghosh since 2021, sources said.

The CBI is expected to place its probe status report before the Supreme Court for September 5. The CBI had earlier told the apex court that the scene of crime was changed when they took over the case from Kolkata Police.

Ahead of the special West Bengal Assembly sitting on Monday, the BJP said that the ruling Trinamool Congress was trying to divert attention of the people in the rape and murder case. The BJP also issued a whip to all its legislators to be present in the House.

The BJP also planned to protest at the offices of district magistrates across the state, demanding justice for the murdered Kolkata doctor.

Meanwhile, celebrated actor-director Aparna Sen expressed confidence in the CBI's ability to solve the case. On Sunday, she praised the federal agency's efforts, asserting that they would be successful in their investigation.

Meanwhile, a drunken youth was arrested from the Esplanade for the alleged molestation of a girl whilst she was on protest.
