Ke Huy Quan's First Leading Action Movie Debuts With Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Score

The movie that features the first leading action role for Ke Huy Quan has been poorly received by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Quan is a former child actor who first rose to fame under the name Jonathan Ke Quan when he played Short Round in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Other early Ke Huy Quan movies include 1985's The Goonies and 1992's Encino Man. Although he held quite a few prominent roles as a young performer, he took a hiatus from oscreen acting between 2002 and 2021.

After returning to the screen as an adult in 2021's Finding ʻOhana, Quan kicked off a career Renaissance when he played a supporting role in the Everything Everywhere All At Once cast opposite Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis. He won an Oscar for his performance, which was one of seven that the movie won, including Best Picture. After that, he has taken on a variety of more prominent adult roles, performing in projects including American Born Chinese, Loki, and Kung Fu Panda 4.

Love Hurts Has Earned A Rotten Tomatoes Splat

Ke Huy Quan's New Movie Is Not Beloved

Love Hurts has debuted with a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score. The action-comedy movie, which was directed by stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio, stars Ke Huy Quan as Marvin Gable, a seemingly wholesome realtor whose past as a hitman catches up with him, sending him on an action-packed adventure with a former associate, Rose (Ariana DeBose). The Love Hurts cast also includes Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, André Eriksen, and Sean Astin.

Ariana DeBose is also an Oscar winner, having won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 2021's West Side Story.

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated an official score for the new Key Huy Quan movies. At the time of writing, the Love Hurts Tomatometer score is a thoroughly Rotten 21%, aggregated from 34 different critics' reviews. This falls far below the "Fresh" threshold of 60%, though its average rating of 4.7 out of 10 reveals that the reviews themselves are more middling than they are truly negative. Generally, critics seem to agree that the movie is both overstuffed and lackluster, which is not a winning combination.

The underwhelming reaction fromLove Hurtsreviews is not necessarily a surprise, considering the fact that the embargo on reviews was only lifted the day before it premiered, belying a lack of studio confidence as opposed to its new release competitor Heart Eyes, which has had a Fresh score for nearly a full week at the time of writing. However, it is still a disappointment, considering the fact that it currently marks the lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating ever earned by Ke Huy Quan, whose previous low on the aggregator service was the 31% earned by 2002's Second Time Around.
