Keanu Reeves' Severance Season 2 Cameo Explained & How He Can Return

Compared to some other sci-fi shows on TV, Severance’s cast and characters stand out for how limited its world expansion has been with new faces. For the most part, the show is confined to the employees in Macrodata Refinement, their supervisors, and Mark’s close family and friends outside Lumon’s office, which doesn’t easily lend itself to the potential for big-name cameos.

As such, learning that Keanu Reeves made an off-screen cameo in Severance season 2, episode 1 came as quite a shock, especially given the unique nature of his role. Like many mysterious aspects of Severance, the John Wick actor’s appearance requires a keen attention to detail in order to notice it, and may not even be decipherable until a second round of watching the episode. However, Severance creator Dan Erickson has confirmed that Reeves is, in fact, in “Hello, Ms. Cobel” in an uncredited role, which could have the potential to give him a recurring part in the Apple TV+ series.

Reeves Voices The Lumon Building

The action movie star can’t be spotted on screen, but he does make a lengthy voice cameo in Severance season 2, episode 1. Keanu Reeves provides the voice for the anthropomorphic Lumon Industries Branch 501 building in the “Lumon Is Listening” video that Seth Milchick shows to Mark, Helly, Irving, and Dylan in the Break Room. The retro Rankin/Bass-style video, meant to emulate friendly animated informational videos from companies, sees the Lumon building explaining the positive changes that have been made to the company in the aftermath of Severance's “Macrodat Uprising,” seemingly indicating optimistic severance reform.

The video ultimately becomes more unsettling than relieving, and brilliantly uses the calm and assuring voice of Keanu Reeves to mask a menacing threat.

Of course, the undertones of the video are quite threatening for Severance’s Macrodata Refiners. While Reeves’ voice gives the impression of a happy and excited approach to work life as Lumon proclaims that they’re “listening” and changing according to the employees’ desires, the video is actually a warning to the characters that Lumon is still watching and listening to what they’re doing, so it’s in their best interest to not rebel and challenge the company again. The video ultimately becomes more unsettling than relieving, and brilliantly uses the calm and assuring voice of Keanu Reeves to mask a menacing threat.

According to Dan Erickson (via Collider), there were a few big names thrown into the hat for the voice of Lumon’s building in Severance season 2, episode 1. They wanted an actor who “people have certain associations with, but also, it had to be a very warm presence.” The voice had to be friendly and reassuring within the video’s context, which would make it more likely for the MDR employees to believe that what this voice is saying is genuine. Of course, The Matrix’s Keanu Reeves fit those requirements.

Severance season 2 holds a 96% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The question, now, is whether Keanu Reeves exists within Severance’s world and was tapped by Lumon’s team to appear in the video, or whether Reeves is meant to be playing a random voice actor. Severance has done an impressive job of avoiding references to pop culture, general media, and real-world events, so there’s no telling whether movie star Keanu Reeves exists in the show's version of Hollywood. Unless Lumon starts recruiting actors to appear on-screen in propaganda videos, the idea of “celebrity” in that world remains a mystery.

Ben Stiller Also Had An Animated Voice Cameo

Keanu Reeves as Lumon’s animated building isn’t the first time that Severance has snuck in a well-known actor for a voice cameo. However, the previous hidden cameo was a lot closer to home, as it was an uncredited voice role by Severance director and executive producer Ben Stiller. In Severance season 1, episode 8, Ben Stiller made an uncredited cameo as the voice of the animated Kier Eagan, who congratulates Helly on her computer screen once she reaches her quota.

After Reeves’ role, it now seems that Lumon’s quirky animated videos, notes, and pop-ups are the best way for Severance to include some clever voice-based cameo Easter eggs. With Lumon propaganda increasing after MDR’s “uprising,” the chances that another “Lumon Is Listening” type video will be shown are pretty high. If another is presented to Mark, Helly, Dylan, and Irving in Severance season 2 or 3, viewers will have to pay close attention to the voices in the videos to see if another star is secretly making a cameo.

Milchick Will Likely Show MDR Similar Videos In The Future

Though it’s possible that Keanu Reeves’ Severance season 2, episode 1 cameo is a one-off appearance, there’s still an opportunity to bring him back in more Lumon propaganda videos. Reeves is now established as the voice of Lumon’s building, just as Stellar is now the animation voice of the company’s founder Kier Eagan, which could lead to recurring voice roles for the actors if there ends up being a “Lumon Is Listening” informational video series. Since MDR’s rebellion is far from over in Severance, Milchick will almost certainly have to sit them down in the Break Room again for another video.
