Kraven The Hunter Tops Streaming Platform After Disappointing Box Office Haul

Now that Kraven the Hunter has ended its disastrous theatrical run, the Marvel film is getting its second wind during its streaming debut. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character, the movie also featured Ariana Debose, Russell Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbot, and Alessandro Nivola. It earned a total gross of $24 million domestically and $60 million globally against a speculated budget of $110 to $130 million.

Additionally, the film was poorly received by fans and critics alike, with an abysmal 16% on Rotten Tomatoes. This led to poor word-of-mouth regarding the film, causing a disappointing -72% decrease in box office sales from its opening weekend to the next. Moreover, the film is reportedly the last planned installment in Sony's Spider-Verse franchise, which focused on making films about Spider-Man supporting characters without the webslinger himself.

Interestingly, however, Kraven the Hunter has become a surprise streaming hit. The movie's official X account revealed that the movie had topped the charts on AppleTV. The post featured a promo image of Taylor-Johnson with the caption: "It’s clear… the kravin’ for Kraven is real. Thank you for making [Kraven the Hunter] the #1 movie on [Apple TV]! Watch Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the world’s greatest hunter this weekend – now on Digital."

What Kraven The Hunter's Streaming Success Means

While the streaming success of Kraven the Hunter is good news for Sony, home media will not make the Spider-Verse entry a profitable film. Its theatrical release failed to make back even half of its median reported budget, and that is without factoring in the cost of marketing the movie. Alternatively, Kraven the Hunter's audience popcornmeter sits at 74%, indicating that the Marvel film has the potential to become a cult classic among fans. Unfortunately, this will do little to tip the scales in terms of profit.

Sony Spider-Verse Film

Total Box Office (As of 1/19/2025)

Venom

$856,085,151

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

$506,813,864

Venom: The Last Dance

$478,455,108

Morbius

$167,460,961

Madame Web

$100,498,764

Kraven the Hunter

$60,827,405

When compared with the box office runs of Sony's other Marvel films, Kraven the Hunter fails to measure up. Per Box Office Mojo, all of their previous films out-earned the movie by tens of millions.

The film with the second-lowest gross, Madame Webb, made almost double what Kraven the Hunter did. As such, home rentals and video on demand purchases are unlikely to significantly impact the film's profitability, making it the worst-performing entry on a list of under-performing films.

Kraven the Hunter's success on AppleTV is more likely to impact its longterm reception as opposed to its profit margin. If the popcornmeter is anything to go by, many audience members enjoyed the film, or at least they found it better than most critics did. Kraven the Hunter may not be a runaway success, but its popularity on streaming platforms might make it a modest fan favorite.
