Landman Gave Jon Hamm The Ending Mad Men Avoided For Don Draper
WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Landman season 1, episode 9.
Landman season 1, episode 9 reveals that Jon Hamm's character Monty Miller passed away after multiple heart scares that led him to the hospital. The ending of Landman season 1, episode 9 brings new possibilities for Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy under these tragic circumstances as well as plenty of new problems and impending headaches. With one episode left of Landman season 1 to go, Tommy and Demi Moore's Cami will be forced to take the reins of M-Tex in Monty's massive absence.
Hamm was one of the main attractions of the Landman season 1 cast and will surely be missed even though he mostly had a supporting role in the series. Hamm became a breakout star in the celebrated Matthew Weiner drama series Mad Men, which earned him 11 Emmy nominations and one Best Lead Actor win. He starred in all 92 episodes of Mad Men and had an unexpected outcome suggesting he finally embraced a peaceful lifestyle before thinking of an iconic Coca-Cola advertisement, something that Monty Miller never had the chance to do.
Jon Hamm In Landman Got The Ending Mad Men Didn’t Give Don Draper
It's shocking that Don was never hospitalized in Mad Men
Monty in the hospital likely dying of heart failure is the probable ending for Don Draper in Mad Men. If not heart failure, then cancer, or any other disease caused by Don’s excessive drinking, cigarette smoking, and generally unhealthy lifestyle. Mad Men sometimes showed Don sick and often showed him black-out drunk. Interestingly, however, the series never showed Don hospitalized for any reason even though logically, that’s how Don would have ended up. Even though Don appeared to find inner peace, it appears he went back to working in an industry and lifestyle he was obsessed with.
The extreme stresses of his job likely caused Monty's heart issues. Even though Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones paid him a visit at the hospital with words of encouragement and advice to take some time off, Monty would never have the chance to decide what he'd do next. Monty is a stern and demanding character who is more addicted to his lifestyle than driven by a passion for the industry. He already had a family and enormous wealth. Still, it seemed like nothing could satisfy his insatiable hunger and blind ambition.
What Happens To M-Tex In Landman If Jon Hamm’s Monty Died
Tommy got a promotion and a whole slate of new problems
It seems more than likely that Monty died based on the final scenes of Landman season 1, episode 9. If this truly is the case, then M-Tex will have to find a new acting CEO while Cami maintains ownership. Before his death, Monty made two major positional changes that moved Tommy up to the role of Vice President of Operations and the cutthroat attorney Rebecca Falcone Vice President of Exploration, much to Tommy and M-Tex attorney Nate's disappointment. Tommy will continue to be the hidden hand behind M-Tex in the Landman season 1 finale as the cartel may have plans to retaliate.
