Lanterns Star Praises Show's "Insane" Script, Reveals Shooting For The DCU Green Lantern Project Begins This Week

LanternsstarPoorna Jagannathan opened up about joining James Gunn's DC Universe in the upcoming series. She will star alongside Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, as well as Garret Dillahunt and Kelly MacDonald. As opposed to focusing on a single hero with the Green Lantern moniker, it will focus on several as they solve an intergalactic mystery. According to Jagannathan, the series is in the early stages of production, with camera testing commencing around the time of the interview.

Speaking with Collider, the actress discussed the upcoming series. Jagannathan praised the writing, saying "this is the first script that [she's] read that [she] understand[s] why there’s an NDA." She continues that "everything is so insane" and that"it is the best writing that [she has] ever read."

Interestingly, Jagannathan is not usually big on the sci-fi genre. The actress explained: "I don’t know anything about sci-fi, and I don’t care, actually, but this script makes sci-fi seem like my world." She stated that the "accessible" writing helps her "understand everything about this world even though [she doesn't] understand this world, so it’s the best sci-fi script [she's] ever read.

What Poorna Jagannathan's Lanterns Comments Mean For the DCU Series

According to Jagannathan, Lanterns is in the camera testing phase, which means it is still early on in its production cycle. Typically, this process occurs in pre-production, and it is intended to refine the look of a project by testing different lenses, lighting setups, et cetera. Lanterns is expected to be in production from February 2025 to July 2025.

As for the Jagannathan's enjoyment of Lanterns' writing, the series is designed as a detective show, drawing on the Green Lantern Corps' status as intergalactic cops. While it will likely still look and feel like a superhero television series, her comments suggest that Lanterns could perhaps be story-driven. If true, this could be a smart way to immerse readers in the expansive world and lore surrounding DC's Green Lantern characters.
