Larian Studios Has Announced A "Media Blackout" As They Focus Down On Their Next Title

While Baldur's Gate 3fansare still waiting for the game's upcoming Patch 8 update, developer Larian Studios is already moving on to its next project. A long-time developer of RPGs, Larian found relatively modest success with titles like Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel in the years before the breakout popularity of Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023 and is looking now to keep that momentum with the studio's next project - which, the studio has confirmed, won't be a prospective Baldur's Gate 4.

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian Studios has confirmed that the studio's "full attention is focused on crafting their next title," and that it will undergo a "media blackout" moving forward. Practically nothing is known yet regarding Larian's secretive next project, codenamed "Excalibur", but from previous statements, the game is likely to still be in the early stages of production, and Larian may not have settled on a concrete direction for it quite yet.

The Creators Of Baldur's Gate 3 Are Going Silent

After over a year of ongoing post-launch support for Baldur's Gate 3, which has quickly become one of the biggest names in the industry, it makes sense for Larian to go silent until there's more to show for the studio's next project, especially BG3's post-launch support seemingly winding down. For fans eager to find out what the studio is up to, however, there will likely be a long wait before any official announcement, and an even longer one until the potential launch of Larian's next game.

The gap between the release of Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the announcement of Baldur's Gate 3, for example, was about three years. Even then, it took another year for BG3 to launch in Early Access, and another three years of development before the game would be fully released - although real-world events like the COVID pandemic impacted development. For the majority of the industry, AAA games take longer to make than ever, and even if Larian's next project is smaller in scope than BG3, it's still likely to be years away at this point.

Our Take: The Next Game For Larian Studios Could Be Another Smash Hit

After Baldur's Gate 3, Larian's Next Game Has The Potential To Reach A Wide Audience

Following up on one of the most successful and popular games of the decade is a tall task, especially when said game has the massive weight of the D&D franchise behind it, but Larian is far from an unproven studio, and its next game should still benefit from BG3's success. What's more in question, though, is exactly what the studio's next game is even going to be - though Larian's last three releases were all CRPGs, earlier games released by the studio took the form of action RPGs and RTS games.

It's far too early for speculation about Larian's "Excalibur" project to hold any real weight, but, at the very least, the game's eventual announcement has the potential to be a surprise for fans who know Larian only for BG3 or Divinity: Original Sin. We're not likely to hear anything about it in 2025, and maybe not even in the following year, either, but Larian Studios' next project after Baldur's Gate 3should still be something that fans can tentatively look forward to.
