Legendary Final Fantasy Composers Uematsu And Soken Create Custom Theme Song For A Pro Wrestler

The well-known musical stylings of Final Fantasy composers Nobuo Uematsu and Masayoshi Soken rang out in a very different venue this weekend. Uematsu is the legendary composer known for his memorable musical scoring for all the Final Fantasy games through FF10, and helped out other composers in the subsequent titles in the franchise. Soken, on the other hand, was responsible for the sweeping and gorgeous score of the MMO Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 16.

The latest project for both composers isn't another Final Fantasy game, or even another game at all. Instead, the two Japanese video game composers have joined forces to provide the new theme music for the wrestler Kenny Omega. The theme made its debut at the Japanese Wrestle Dynasty, and was shared by SgtDrP3pp3rs on Reddit. The theme is, as expected of the two FF composers, fully orchestrated and includes an epic full chorus as well as an accompanying intro video that looks just as impressive as the music sounds.

Jason Miller And Uematsu Lend Their Voices To The Wrestler's Theme

Kenny Omega announced his new entrance music before the event on his X account, giving fans a heads-up about what to expect. According to the post, the song was composed by Masayoshi Soken, and includes vocals by Jason Miller who also sings in several FF14 songs.

Fun fact: Uematsu once had dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. In an exclusive interview with VGChartz in 2011, his wrestler name would have been Scotch the Piper. He revealed that he would "wear Scottish national costume (the ones like skirts) and play the bagpipes as I walk in. When I'm losing the game, I'd pick the scotch whiskey that I hid under the ring, to be invincible."

Soken has shared a wholesome photo from the fight on X, calling it a "damn good match!!!" (translated from Japanese). The composer writes that he's thankful for getting to write the theme song, and that he "couldn't help but include Omega's phrase." This phrase is a drawn-out "O...me...ga...!" And the voice for this catchphrase was provided by none other than "Uematsu-san," who also appears in the photo from the event, as one of the "old guys who enjoyed Kenny Omega's match," as Soken calls them.

Omega's Last Theme Was One Winged Angel

Kenny Omega is the stage name of Canadian-born Tyson Smith, who enjoys playing video games when he's not winning matches and wrestling awards. This isn't the first time he's shown up somewhere in full Gamer mode. In 2019, he made an entrance in a match cosplaying as Sans from Undertale,complete with a thematically appropriate intro video, which can be watched in full in a video by Gabbex on YouTube.

Last year, the Canadian wrestler got to enter the ring to the sounds of One Winged Angel Rebirth, the iconic theme of Final Fantasy 7antagonist Sephiroth as it appears in the FF7 Remake. The entrance was paired with the appropriate attire and was shared on the New Japan Pro-Wrestling YouTube channel.

It's pretty incredible that this year's entrance was custom-made for Omega by Soken and other well-known names in the world of video game music. I can't wait for a clean version of the theme to be released, so I can enjoy some epic Final Fantasy wrestling music. And yes, in case you're wondering, Kenny Omega did win his match. With a powerful entrance like that, how could he not?
