First making an appearance in Astonishing X-Men #44, which followed the X-Treme X-Men as they embarked around the Multiverse to stop different variations of evil Professor Charles Xavier. While universe hopping, the team meets a variant called Captain James Howlett from Earth-12025, who was a major leader of Canada and, together with Hercules, was one of his Earth's greatest heroes. Not only is this Earth’s Wolverine and Hercules dynamic beyond epic with their monster-hunting lore, but their love story, albeit short, was heartfelt and persevering.
Another notable aspect of this variant is that Hercules gifted this variant of Wolverine Adamantine, which he bonded to his claws.
A large departure from Earth-616 Wolverine, Captain Howlett is in a gay relationship with Marvel’s Greek pantheon god, Hercules, with it being noted that the two slew a gigantic beast that threatened Canada and, upon their victory, the heroes confessed their love for each other. Zeus, furious with their same-sex relationship and that a deity was fraternizing with a mortal, banished the star-crossed lovers to Tartarus, where they continued to slay monsters and demons. Despite the large hurtle of the multiverse, Captain Howlett has a strong connection to several aspects of the current story, and there are endless ways to bring Multiversal variants into the main Earth-616 narrative.

Though Wolverine has mainly been presented as straight, there have been times where Marvel danced around the idea that Wolverine and Cyclops could have a secret attraction, turning their love triangle with Jean Grey into a love throuple. A theory that was mainly insinuated during the Krakoa Era due to their joint bedrooms and Scott and Wolverine’s joint venture on the moon, but it was ultimately a greatly polarizing concept.

Hercules would make a considerable amount of sense as Wolverine’s next ally when taking into account that he has experience with the metal of the gods, and his golden mace is made of Adamantine. The mystery of how Romulus returned is still to be seen so perhaps a Captain Howlett revival is not too far away.
