Lost's Star Wars Easter Egg Foreshadowed The Force Awakens By Seven Years

Seven years before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams' popular show Lostreferenced the single most iconic line in Star Wars. Lost premiered in 2004, and it captivated audiences for six seasons with its delightful characters, innovative concepts, and mind-bending plot twists. Although the Lost series finale remains controversial, the show is impressively still a topic of conversation nearly 15 years after its conclusion.

Creator and executive producer of Lost, J.J. Abrams, went on to direct The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, both of which also proved quite controversial. Lost and Star Wars have more in common than J.J. Abrams and a bit of controversy, though. One surprising (and devastating) moment in Lost season 4 was really the perfect Star Wars Easter egg.

Lost Season 4 Uses Star Wars' Most Iconic Line

This Line Has Appeared In Star Wars From The Very Beginning

In Lost season 4, things take a much darker turn—even given how grim the plot had already been—when a group of mercenaries, led by Martin Keamy, search the island for Ben Linus and kill most of the people who get in their way. Sadly, this includes Karl, a teenage boy who helped the survivors of Oceanic flight 815 not only when Jack, Kate, and Sawyer were held captive by the Others but also when the Others were on their way to attack the survivors' camp. Before Karl died, however, he uttered a line that is integral to Star Wars.

Just before being struck in the chest with bullets fired by Keamy and his men, Karl turned to his girlfriend, Alex, and said, "I just have a bad feeling about this." This line (or variations of it) has become a staple throughout Star Wars movies and TV shows, first uttered by Luke Skywalker in A New Hope and now appearing in nearly every Star Wars project. While this could be coincidental, it's unlikely, especially because J.J. Abrams has long loved Star Wars. Although a sad moment, this makes Karl's line a brilliant Star Wars Easter egg in an unexpected place.

J. J. Abrams Has Always Been A Star Wars Fan

It's No Surprise Abrams Was Using This Line Even In 2008

This reference to the iconic Star Wars line in Lost was the perfect precursor to J.J. Abrams taking on the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Although the sequels remain a touchy subject in the franchise, with many still considering them some of Star Wars' worst movies, it's never been in question that Abrams has a genuine love of Star Wars. Whether that translated to well-executed movies is another matter, but it's evident that Abrams was already a true Star Wars fan when he signed on for The Force Awakens.

This reference to the iconic Star Wars line in Lost was the perfect precursor to J.J. Abrams taking on the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

With both Star Wars and Lost also technically falling under the larger sci-fi category, it makes sense that Lost would be the perfect point of connection for Abrams to make this reference. Clearly, even years before J.J. Abrams officially joined Star Wars, he had the franchise on his mind. This one surprising line in Lost therefore perfectly foreshadowed Star Wars: The Force Awakens seven years before the movie was released.
