Manipur doctor shot by armed miscreants, suffers injury

Imphal: The managing director of the Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre in Manipur was injured when unknown armed miscreants opened fire at him.

Unknown armed miscreants shot at a doctor on Soibam Leikai Ayangpalli Road here on Saturday, injuring him, police said.

The managing director of the Diabetes Hospital and Research Centre, Dr Dhanabir received bullet wounds on his left arm. He was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) for treatment, the police said.

According to a UNI report, meanwhile, police said search operations were carried out at Kangpokpi and Jiribam in which one 5.56 mm INSAS rifle without a magazine, two 22 country made pistol with magazines, single bore rifle, a .303 rifle, hand grenades and SLR magazine were recovered.
Movement of 120 and 13 nos. of vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 and NH-2 were ensured, police said. The National Highways of Manipur were blocked since May 3, 2023 by Kuki militants.

As per a media report in The Sentinel, The assailants also fired multiple rounds at an ambulance parked in front of the hospital, leaving four bullet marks on the vehicle. An ambulance rushed the injured doctor to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal East.

According to local police, Dr Moirangthem Dhanabir had previously received multiple threats from an underground outfit over various issues, including monetary demands. “It is possible that an underground outfit was involved in the incident,” police said.
