Marvel Rivals Getting This Iconic Suit From Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Is A Great Sign Of Things To Come
Sony recently announced that one of the suits from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would be making its way to Marvel Rivals as a new skin. The addition of a skin based on another studio’s game is a bit of a surprise, but it is certainly a welcome one. This announcement isn’t just exciting for Spider-Man fans, but also for the future of Marvel Rivals cosmetics as a whole.
Marvel Rivals adding a skin from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 seems to open up a lot of possibilities for cosmetic options in the game. Not that Marvel Comics is in any way lacking in alternate looks for Marvel Rivals' many different heroes, but knowing that Rivals can pull from other source material is an exciting revelation. Hopefully, this collaboration with Sony is just the beginning of what Marvel Rivals has in store.
Marvel Rivals Is Getting The Advanced Suit 2.0
The Advanced Suit 2.0 Is The Default Look From Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
The new skin for Marvel Rivals (revealed on X) is Spider-Man’s Advanced Suit 2.0. This is the default skin from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and is an updated version of the Advanced Suit from Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game.
The suit is notable for its white spider symbol and white highlights, subtle changes to Spider-Man’s iconic look that nonetheless make this suit stand out. Warm reception to Marvel’s Spider-Man games made this suit something of an instant classic among Spider-Man fans, and so it’s great to know that Sony is open to letting other properties like Marvel Rivals use this look.
This isn’t the first time the Advanced Suit 2.0 has made its way into a property outside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The suit also showed up in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. However, since that movie was also produced by Sony, it wasn’t as big of a surprise to see it there. Seeing the suit come to Marvel Rivals is more notable because NetEase isn’t owned by Sony, and the game is available on multiple platforms. Hopefully, more game studios will be willing to work with Marvel Rivals to make similar crossovers happen.
Marvel Rivals Should Get Costumes From Other Marvel Games
Marvel Rivals Could Collaborate With A Wide Range Of Marvel Games
As exciting as it is to see the Advanced Suit 2.0 come to Marvel Rivals, it is maybe even more exciting to consider what else might show up in the game going forward. It’s very possible that other game studios could follow Sony’s example, and lend their unique Marvel designs to Rivals’ heroes. Certain heroes in Marvel Rivals are prime candidates for crossover skins, given their past, present, and upcoming history in video games.
One easy example of a Marvel Rivals hero who could get skins from another game is Luna Snow. Unlike most heroes in Rivals, Luna Snow is not a Marvel Comics original but was instead created for the game Marvel: Future Fight. Future Fight has several unique looks for Luna, like her Light Sirius Armor or Summer Lilac look that mixes up her original color palette. Both skins are pretty big departures from her styles in Marvel Rivals and would be nice additions for one of the game’s best strategist characters.
Scarlet Witch is another good candidate for a crossover costume given her unique appearance in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Though her standard costume in the game isn’t far off from what appears in Marvel Rivals, Midnight Suns’ Fallen design for Scarlet Witch is a different story. The skin gives her more demonic features, glowing green hair, and eyes to match. It’s the kind of distinctly different look that would be perfect as an alternate skin in Marvel Rivals, because it’s not just a palette swap, the way most of her current skins basically are.
Several upcoming Marvel games would likely want to take advantage of this opportunity to promote their game with the help of Marvel Rivals and could contribute some cool new skins. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra features an old-school World War II look for Captain America, and a unique version of Black Panther from the time. Art for Marvel Rivals featuring Blade was recently previewed, meaning Bethesda’s upcoming Marvel’s Blade could also feature a crossover skin in the game.
There are a lot of Marvel games with unique looks for Rivals’ heroes, too many to list here. But the point is that there is a wealth of awesome and unique looks that the game could draw on for future content. Though some crossovers may be less likely - Midnight Suns for instance was a commercial flop and much less popular than Marvel’s Spider-Man - the fact that they are at least possible is an exciting prospect. If Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game ever comes out, it would seem like an easy option given this first crossover.
Why Popular Suits Are A Win-Win For Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals Skins Can Be Fan Pleasing And Good For Promotion
Getting popular looks for Marvel Rivals’ heroes is great both for players and the game’s developers. From a player's side, it means getting some fan-favorite looks that players likely thought never had a chance to make it into the game. Seeing as Marvel Rivals’ cosmetics cost quite a bit of in-game currency, it’s important that the available skins are ones that players can get excited about. By choosing looks that they know are popular, NetEase can keep players happy with the game’s cosmetic options.
Besides keeping their players happy, NetEase can also benefit from the added attention these crossovers can bring to the game. Sony made an announcement about the Advanced Suit 2.0 coming to Marvel Rivals. This means players who might not be following MarveRivals’ social media accounts could still be hearing about the game through other channels. If other Marvel games followed suit, and more developers were posting about their crossovers with Rivals, it would mean more eyes on the game.
Who knows, this crossover could be the first step towards even more skins inspired by other pieces of Marvel media. There are plenty of MCU looks that fans would likely enjoy seeing in Marvel Rivals, so hopefully Marvel’s Spider-Man has opened the door for more cross-promotional items in the future. Seeing as these types of promotions can bring attention to both properties involved, it seems likely that upcoming Marvel films might want to hop on the bandwagon to help combat the ever-growing issue of superhero fatigue.
