PUERTO PRINCESA CITY – Courtney Jewel Trangia of Masbate ruled the girls' 16-17 years old discus throw at the start of the Batang Pinoy National Championships Sunday at Ramon V. Mitra Jr. Sports Complex here.
Trangia registered 38.30 meters to beat Hannah Ashlei Regaya of Davao del Norte (31.54) and Trisha Gayle Nalla of Maasin, Leyte (31.06).
"It's my third time to join this tournament and I won (it) all," the Grade 12 student of the Masbate Sports Academy (MSA) School said. "My training with coaches Jeric Cabug and John Rey Mendoza at the MSA is year round so my confidence is high."
Trangia will skip the shot put event as she is leaving for Malaysia Monday to compete in a national invitational.
She registered 39.47 meters to claim the discus gold at the Cebu City Palarong Pambansa in July.
In the boys' Under-16 shot put, Rich Justin Torres of Tarlac secured the gold medal in 12.16 meters.
Lloyd Ivan Mahinay of Cagayan de Oro (10.86) got the silver while Nicholas Michael Siobal of Quezon City (10.57) settled for the bronze.
In swimming, Anton Paulo Dominick Della of San Fernando, La Union and Liaa Margarette Amoguis of Quezon City topped their divisions in the 16-17 200m Individual Medley.
Della clocked 2:15.58 to prevail over Coby Marcos Rivilla of Ormoc City (2:17.28) and Juan Alessandro Suarez of Davao City (2:18.71).
Amoguis triumphed in the girls' division with a time of 2:33.25. Teammate Aubrey Tom (2:35.64) was second, followed by Arabella Nadeen Taguinota of Pasig City (2:36.80).
The other gold medalists were Ashton Clyde Jose of Taguig City (boys' 14-15), Arvin Naeem Taguinota of Pasig City (boys' 12-13), Kyla Louise Bulaga of San Fernando, La Union (girls' 14-15) and Sophia Rose Garra of Malabon City (girls' 12-13).
Arvin Taguinota collected his second gold medal after dominating the 100m freestyle in 57.92 seconds, while Garra also ruled the girls' division in 1:02.61.
The Batang Pinoy, organized by the Philippine Sports Commission for athletes under 17 years old, will award PHP5 million in cash to the overall champion local government unit.
The second to fifth placers will receive PHP4 million, PHP3 million, PHP2 million and PHP1 million in that order. (PNA)
