Missing You Author Shares His Surprising Reaction To Netflix Show's Finale: "The Most Emotional Ending That I've Experienced"
Warning! This article contains major Missing You spoilers.
Missing You author Harlan Coben shares his emotional reaction to the finale of the Netflix adaptation. Missing You arrived one year after Coben's Fool Me Oncedominated the streaming charts, with the new series focusing on a detective who loses the love of her life. It is based on Coben's 2014 novel of the same name. The adaptation is led by Slow Horses star Rosalind Eleazar, with an ensemble that includes Ashley Walters, Jessica Plummer, and Richard Armitage.
In an interview with Variety, Coben reveals the new Netflix show garnered an emotional reaction out of him. The author, who is an executive producer on the series, notes that Fool Me Once did get a reaction out of him but the latest adaptation was the most emotionally invested he's gotten. The quote is below:
“This is the most emotional ending that I’ve experienced. When I watched episode 5, I actually cried. I think I had a little bit of a tear in my eye maybe with Fool Me Once also. But I think this will be the most emotional series.”
What Happens In Missing You & What The Ending Means
There's A Focus On Relationships That Pays Off
The mystery thrillercenters on Detective Kat Donovan (Eleazar). Eleven years ago, her fiancé disappeared and Kate hasn’t heard from him since. But, by chance, as she swipes on a dating app, she's shocked to see his face. The fiancé's apparent reemergence forces the detective to look into her father's murder and dig into secrets of the past. That all comes to a climax in the Missing You ending, which takes surprising turns.
The character focus takes the show beyond just a twisty thriller.
The two men in Kate's life prove to be connected. It is Kate's fiancé who killed her father. The father, Clint (Lenny Henry), was a crooked cop and he was living a double life. But the death was accidental. The fiancé, Josh (Ashley Walters), was only trying to stop Clint from behaving violently and hurting someone who might have exposed his duplicity. Josh left, though, because he couldn't handle the secret and lying to Kate.
With a Missing You cast that also includes Steve Pemberton, Marc Warren, and Samantha Spiro, the five-episode miniseries takes the time to really examine how Kate deals with all of the uncertainty and secrecy in her life. The character focus takes the show beyond just a twisty thriller because the impact on Kate and those she loves is readily apparent, allowing the cast to tap into something beyond just the soapy elements. It all comes together thanks to the strength of Eleazar's lead performance.
Our Take On Missing You's Ending
Eleazar Is The MVP
Eleazar is similarly great as one of the main cast members on the Apple TV+ spy dramedy Slow Horses. But while that supporting performance is at least partly comedic, Missing You goes all in on emotion and puts Eleazar at the center. It's to her credit that the adaptation's twists and turns don't tip over into melodrama, instead packing a genuine punch.
