Mr. Freeze Is Being Reinvented In a Way Nobody Saw Coming: "Everything Feels Different"

One of Batman's most chilling villains is about to make his debut in the wild Absolute Universe. Since DC All In began, the Absolute line of comics has updated several of DC's biggest heroes and villains, and Batman's world is no exception.

Darkseid's death has led to a world where things are harder than ever for the heroes. The Absolute version of the Dark Knight has had his hands full, with both new villains like the Party Animals and a more extreme version of Black Mask. ButAbsolute Batman writer Scott Snyder looks to the future and reveals what he has planned for the Absolute reinvention of Mr. Freeze.

Absolute Batman has been going strong since October when DC Comics began its new All In initiative. After three hard-hitting issues, series writer Scott Snyder spoke with several outlets to discuss his series and promote Absolute Batman’s fourth issue, a book Snyder has described as the “Year One” for the brand-new Batman. One such outlet Snyder spoke to was Owen Likes More Comics on YouTube, where the two touched on a number of topics regarding the writer’s work on Absolute Batman.

Before diving into his particular work on Absolute Batman, Snyder discussed how he helped shape the grander aspects of DC All In and how he and other creatives wanted the initiative to show how amazing comics could be. Snyder emphasized how he wanted something that combined the best parts of the New 52 and Rebirth that kept the history and lore of the DC Universe while also allowing creators to make new, exciting things with the existing characters.

Eventually, Snyder responded to a prompt about how he has reinvented certain parts of Batman’s lore in Absolute Batman. The writer takes that opportunity to reveal that there will be a two-part story set after the initial arc that deals with the Absolute Universe’s version of Mr. Freeze. Snyder recalls how he previously wrote the character in his previous Batman book and that this new one is “rebuilt from the ground up”. He also said that everything “feels different” about this new take on Mr. Freeze and that, unlike his Prime Universe counterpart, “he wouldn’t be Victor in love with Nora”.

And What Will it Mean for Absolute Batman?

Fans may recall that Scott Snyder previously made some changes to Mr. Freeze when he was writing Batman during the New 52. In the altered continuity, Victor and Nora were never married. Nora was cryogenically preserved decades ago and Freeze became obsessed with her after researching Nora for his PhD. But that retcon aside, Snyder seems to be doing something much different compared to the New 52. He wants to completely overhaul the character and turn Mr. Freeze into a new kind of villain for Absolute Batman.

But what exactly would that look like? Black Mask was updated from a gangster to being the leader of an international criminal cabal, while the Joker was updated to be one of the richest people on the planet. Meanwhile, several of Batman’s other villains, like the Riddler and the Penguin, were updated to be his childhood friends (though Nygma appears to be making an AI-powered robot that could be the Absolute Riddler). There’s no telling what an Absolute Mr. Freeze could look like just yet, but Snyder clearly wants him to be something special.

One thing that should be noted about Absolute Batman is that he hasn’t faced a ‘proper’ supervillain yet. Just heavily armed criminals and paramilitary fighters. Someone like Mr. Freeze would be the first time the Batman variant isn’t going to be able to use the tricks he’s relied on so far to fight people with guns and knives. Whether Absolute Freeze utilizes freeze technology like the Prime Universe villain or has actual freeze powers himself, encountering Mr. Freeze is going to be a big step in Absolute Batman’s history.

If there's one thing that can be said about the Absolute Batman, it's that he's very adaptable. But he hasn't had to fight someone as dangerous or as advanced as Mr. Freeze just yet. Of course, it comes down to just how different this villain actually is from his doppelgänger. Regardless, Bruce is about to come face-to-face with a true supervillain and whatever Mr. Freeze is like in this universe, he's going to challenge the Absolute Batman in a way he hasn't experienced yet.
