My Hero Academia vs Jujutsu Kaisen: New Sales Report Reveals Which Finale Is Leading the Charge

2024 was a more successful year for both Jujutsu Kaisenand My Hero Academiathan ever before, as both of these series concluded this year. Additionally, each series put out an epilogue that properly tied the story to a close, giving the characters fans have grown to adore over the past few years the send-off they deserve.

These two shonen mangas rank among 2024's bestsellers, but only one title can reign supreme, achieving the highest sales. The question of which series is the most popular, Jujutsu Kaisen or My Hero Academia, finally has an answer, laying the debate to rest with finality.

My Hero Academia Was the Highest-Selling WSJ Manga in December 2024

My Hero Academia Outsold Jujutsu Kaisen by Just Under 3,000 Volumes, Making It the Winner of December 2024

A post by @WSJ_manga on X revealed the sales of the publication's most popular series, in particular, during the week of December 23–December 29, the last week in December 2024. Of the listed mangas, including titles like Blue Box, Kagurabachi, and Yozakura Family, Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia were the top sellers on the list. Jujutsu Kaisen's 29th volume sold 796,910 copies and Jujutsu Kaisen volume 30 sold 804,318 copies, but neither of these volumes were the winner in December 2024. That accolade goes to My Hero Academia instead, because its 42nd volume sold a whopping 807,283 copies.

Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia's sales were pretty close, but ultimately, My Hero Academia pulled through with slightly higher numbers, and can now call itself the best-selling manga of December 2024. Comparing both manga's final volumes directly, volume 42 of My Hero Academia sold 2,965 more copies than volume 30 of Jujutsu Kaisen. These two finale volumes were highly sought after by fans of each series, not just because they concluded the mangas for good, but because each of them included an epilogue as well, expanding upon the aftermath of important battles and revealing scenes of characters in the future.

Both Epilogues Were Full of Thrilling Reveals About the Series’ Best Characters

From Deku’s Romance With Ochaco to the Reveal of Nobara’s Family, These Epilogues Help Explain the High Sales

Jujutsu Kaisen's epilogue, which came out on December 25, 2024, contained a number of exciting surprises, such as the reveal of Nobara's mother and grandmother, more backstory on Urame, the conclusion of Yuji Itadori's character arc, and even a lighthearted nod to Panda, a popular character in the series. My Hero Academia's epilogue featured a reunion of Class 1-A's students eight years after fighting Shigaraki and All For One, and showed off the heroes' new jobs and how their lives turned out after the war, as well as hinting at romance between Ochaco and Deku.

Although My Hero Academia did outsell Jujutsu Kaisen in December, it is difficult to compare the two mangas, since although they are both shonens, fans appreciate them for different reasons. Both series have received appreciative fanbases that most mangakas can only dream of, and both Gege Akutami, author of Jujutsu Kaisen, and Kohei Horikoshi, author of My Hero Academia, have expressed the utmost gratitude to the fans who have supported them over the past few years. Akutami and Horikoshi are two of the greatest talents in the industry, and it is undeniable that their series will never be forgotten.
